Rigs: 3way swivel short hook lenth 2/0 varivas rotten bottom

Report:Sunday afternoon I met up with some friends who were fishing a comp at Ballyreen. I arrived about 2 hours into the comp and fishing was very slow with only one pollack and a dog to show for the adults. One of the juniors had managed 3 wrasse so with this in mind I headed back inland and collected a few hardbacks.

It didnt take me long to set up and get a bait in the water. The first rattling bite was after about 10 minutes and produced a pretty little wrasse.

I missed another couple of bites and then managed to find a softie in my bucket of crabs. I cast into a darker area infront of me and in no time at all the rod arched as another wrasse dived into the kelp

I had a few casts for mackerel after this but there were none showing. The East wind seems to break up the shoals and send them offshore.

Tuesday evening I headed off to the same area searching for mackerel and had a few casts with no luck. Another lad moved to the right of me an spent about 30 minutes Pendulum casting feathers. I only saw him land one fish.

I set the rotton bottom rig up and cast to all the likely holes around me. I was getting lots of rattles but nothing solid so I think they were smaller fish. Just after high water the rod tip slammed down and a beautiful orange coloured wrasse hooked itself for me.

Happy with the one fish I packed up and began to plan my next trip: to the South of Clare where the big wrasse live.
