Clogherhead Sardines 04/06/09

Plenty of sardines caught off the rocks at Clogherhead.
Using a very small feather/shimp like rigs.
Cooked them with breadcrums and garlic butter. Wow...

Sardines..? Do you have a pic of them..? If not could you post one next time. cheers

herring maybe?

I've had a few over the years fishing from greystones with sandeel feathers. Similiar as herring but with a bit more stocky looking for the size. Maybe call them pilchards and people might be more likely to believe you! Smelt also look the similiar, I think they're all classed as sardines in the canning industry.
Far too tasty to use as bait!

You sure they're not smelt, they don't seem to have the sardine mouth?

Not that sure, but they might well be Sprats. They are not Pilchards, to the best of my knowledge they have dark spots along their flanks. Smelt have teeth. I will have a look for some pics of them from the net and pot them.

Found some pics for you all to have a look at, might shed some light on the subject. I have looked myself and can't decide, all the fish in the pics do not have as small an eye as the fish posted grangebellew and that is what has me so undecided, I will leave it to you guys to decide, but my money is still on them being Sprats, we had some large ones from Fenit Pier a few years ago, around September time. They would not seem to be Smelt, as the scales of the Smelt would seem to be smaller than the fish in grangebellew's pic.
