donegal 28.05.09

People: me , my dad, mick

Duration:7.00pm-1.00am

Tide:high at 10.00pm

Weather:best this year yet

Bait:mackeral, squid, bluey

Rigs:pulley, up&over, 2 hook flapper

Results:4 congor, 6 thornback, 9 dogfish, 1 mackeral

Report: arrived on the mark and got the rods all set up, pretty soon had the first of 4 small congor ranging from 76-100cm even managed to get them all unhooked and safely returned, though mick did scream like a girl when handling his first congor  but at least he has another species to his name. I really do need to get myself one of those t-bar disgorgers in case I do land a proper conger some day, I reckon the little forceps would leave my fingers dangerously close to the inside of the mouth
My dad came out for a few hours with us and landed 3 dogfish and a thornback :D so he may come out again hope he's not disappointed next time.
mick caught the mackeral, about (1.5 lb) on his fish baited flapper rig which was the surprise of the night, but then he always does try and have a supply of fresh bait :P
As the night progressed it turned into a copetition to catch the smallest ray, winner being about 19cm wingspan cute looking and not so scary to unhook, I suppose a mini species comp really :!:

Well done mate. some amount of species. I remember my bro screaming like a girl the first conger we caught at portstewart harbour when we 12 years old. are the rays back in force in donegal then?

remember this is donegal, the Thornbacks come hear to pass the winter  leaving you guys to wonder where they go when they leave your shores :!:
I'll bet that comment leaves me not catching another ray all year :(

Get yourself the T-Bar, lad. The knack of them isn't hard once you learn it.

Those forceps you talk about are dangerous. Imagine landing a nice conger. You lock the forceps on the hook in his gob, and he suddenly spins..... leaving you with 2 broken fingers.

Cousin of mine told me he saw it happen to a guy with a big Ferox trout. I'd imagine there'd be more power in a conger.
