Report:With the bass ban fast approaching and the weather forecast not too good for the rest of the week, I decided to join Fishface for a last stab at catching a bass. I arrived at the mark to see a good surf running,, things were looking as they should so i was keeping my fingers crossed. I was set up with 2 rods out when fishface arrived and he wasnt long getting some bait in the water. Some other anglers arrived and set up near us,,,,,,too near

,, cant understand why you'd do that when the whole beach is empty

,,,and they eventually gave Neil a bit of room when they got their lines tangled. There was a good run of tide to our right along the shoreline so I was using 5 oz grippers which seemed to hold the bait straight out in front of me. As bassy as the place looked, all the baits were coming back untouched

, but we kept at it, i was holding out hope that something would happen at dusk. Then i noticed that the line on one of my rods was strung out to the right along the beach

,, and i wondered if the gripper had come out ,,or maybe some weed had pulled the line across. I took up the slack and there was definitely some weight on the end,, as i reeled in further i could feel something pulling back and forth,,,then i saw the unmistakable spiny bass fins sticking out of the water

. I let the waves do the work after that and just kept tension on the line and reeled in on the oncoming waves ( i dont get much practice with bass

), and soon he was on the beach, barely attached to the bottom hook, 2/0, of the two hook flapper:shock:

. He took rag tipped with squid .I was absolutely delighted

and let out a yell

. Fishface watched on in stunned silence

,, i'm sure he was absolutely delighted that i had caught a bass

.A quick photo and measure, roughly 55cms, and he was gently returned to fight another day by Neil, who found out that his boots werent waterproof after all

. That was me happy for the night and apart from two massive bites for Neil, which he missed, we didnt catch anything else. For once, i was packed up and left before Neil, who stayed on to try to avoid the blank(to no avail

). We gave some of our leftover rag to an angler, who turned out to be Bigballs from the site, must get a SAI badge as its amazing how many guys you meet out fishing from the site. Anyways its great to get the bass monkey off my back, and i can get back to my "handy" fishing.
