Report
wanted to try some where new for daylight hours so headed to west cork to a rock mark in search of Bass and gilthead bream. got set up around 1730 and found it to be fairly weedy with a very strong current. we were using crab here. 2 lads near us had a small Bass earlier so we were hoping for something similar or preferably a bream. neither were playing ball tho with just the one flounder to be got. can’t remember what size but under the 30cms. the pic is a bit too bright to make it out. the fishing was slow here so Donal pulled out the spinning rod and had a good bite but lost it after a few yards. meanwhile I was putting back the flounder and slipped into a big rock pool that thankfully wasn’t too deep. I only got drenched to my knees   .

we packed up at just before 2100 and headed to a beach that has thrown up a nice few Bass in the last few weeks. got there and was set up around 2145. the surf was nonexistent and the easterlies were getting stronger so we didn’t expect much. bait here was lug and crab very close in and razor out at 40yards hoping for Bass. after a while I pulled in a double of flounder. one around 30cm and the other was about 21cm. the wind was getting stronger and stronger making bite detection nonexistent as the rods were flapping all night. at around 2330 Donal got a definite bite. a good pull then slack line so off he went with the rod winding until he caught up with the fish. shortly after a nice little 43/44cm Bass was on the beach. we were planning on staying till about 0230 to fish the first bit of incoming tide but the wind got even stronger so packed up and headed off at around 0130 as it was getting very uncomfortable.
all fish were returned to be caught again.
not a great days fishing but a nice day to be out. Hopefully the easterlies will go before Thursday.

Well done on the flounder. Your buddy certainly got a plump bass alright.

Indeed - although I might try one of those east facing beaches over the next day or so - there should be a good surf even if the fish arn't there.

I don’t remember the Bass looking that fat when he was landed. It might just be the picture. He wasn’t weighted; just a quick pic and he happily swam away. We weren’t too bothered about the size. We were just glad of landing 1 of our 2 target species yesterday.
Im gonna head back there tonight. not expecting too much surf but can’t be worse than last night. I had 2 Bass there a while back when the surf was pretty small so fingers crossed. Im just hoping the wind isn’t as bad as last night.
I’ll be hoping to get a few flatties even if there’s not any Bass there.
A 15cm flounder on a hook is better than a 00cm Bass any day
