Mon May 11, 2009 4:44 pm

People:Myself and KenM

Duration:20:00 to 22.30

Tide:high but leavin'

Weather:Savage! Nice n sunny. Light breeze

Bait:Smelt, Freeze Dried Rag & feathers (with green jelly worms)

Rigs:Float rig

Results:3 Pollack (5lb'er and 2 little uns!)

Report:Float rig turned up nothin but feathers saved the day!!

We actually began the day earlier that morning (approx 10am) with some sausages sizzling on the pan on the pier and some feather rigs (to keep the hands clean while we devoured the sambos!). At this stage we were fishing a pretty low tide and didnt get so much as a nibble.
We decided to then head over past Ballina (dropped into very sound chap in the tackle shop in Ballina by the riverside who filled out pockets with what we needed and pointed us in the direction of a little mark near Killalaa :)
We headed out to a do some rock fishing out there using a float rig (about 5ft to the hook) with a rag and smelt cocktail. An hour or so there proved fruitless but we were battling the odds with an incoming tide and some pretty decent waves.
After yet another fruitless (and somewhat disappointing) run we popped over to Killala pier where we tried some feathers and float fishing with same setup as before. Not so much as a how do you do!!! I'm not paranoid but I reckon those in the know in the fish world were tipped off!! That or there was some Annual fish gathering somewhere other than where we were fishing. Everyone around us was blanking too!!

We then decided to cut our losses and head back to Easky (as the pub was starting to beckon!) but not without trying the pier for an outgoing tide (High tide was at 7pm .. we got there at 8pm). After some float fishing I decided that it was time to go bananas with some feathers for a last ditch attempt at a catch .... and it worked!!!! After a cast I allowed the bomb to drop for about 15secs to be sure I was good and deep. After some teasing through the water I got a nice surprise of a strong tug on the line. The smart little B*****d decided to head under the reef but with some patience and some enjoyable playing I eventually managed to get him beside the pier. KenM then decided to risk his warm dry clothes to venture down to collect our prize (damn slippy steps!!) ... and here's what popped out ... not the biggest catch in history but I was certianly happy given that this chap prevented a blank on an otherwise fruitless (but nice sunny) day!!!
