Larrybane and Balintoy 20-4-09

Thu Apr 23, 2009 10:51 pm

People:Just Me.

Duration:15.00-20.30

Tide:Rising

Weather:Lovely :D

Bait:Rag, Squid, Mack

Rigs:2 up 1 down

Results:4 flounder, 1 plaice (I hope) and 2 Coalies

Report: Headed up the coast to try and land my first Plaice. I tried Larrybane from 3 to 6.30 to no avail the baits just kept coming back untouched. Lovely place the scenery is amazing and I will be back!! (Arnie would be proud). I then made the move to Balintoy as a last hope of not having my first blank of the year. I was not dissapointed. From the off I was getting knocks and it was not long until I landed a nice flounder. My second rod wa also getting small knocks but as the first flounder was deep hooked I was kind of occupied. After alot of fumbling I finally remembered Stevecrows post about deep hooked flatties. I only had a gemini disgorger and wasnt sure if it would be too big. Carefully I fed the disgorger through the gills and wrapped the line round, removed the disgorger with the line and bingo the hook was easily removed and fed back through the gills and popped out the mouth. So thanks to Stevecrows post a nice flounder swam away to fight another day !! :D

The second rod was still nodding so I brought it in to see what is hopefully my first ever Plaice.

I managed another few flounder and a couple of coalies on my mini rod before I really had to pack up and head for home.

Just off the rocks to the right of the pier across the beach.

One of the nicest marks I fished scenery wise.

Is it definately a Plaice ?? I think the bones on the head make it a plaice?? Dont they

Great to see a change of venue providing instant results, when I'm suffering the dreaded blank I dont too often think about moving on somewhere else.....mental note to myself

Your plaice looks like a west coast plaice to me.....but we call 'em flounder on the east coast

....defo a flounder, sorry mate

I thought that it was Plaice that had the bones on the head and that Flounder didnt. Im confussed now.

Heres a close up of the head. There are clearly bones running from the eyes to the laterial line.

well done jonny on getting out to a few new marks and beating the blank :P :P :P :P unfortunately i think it's a flounder man :x :x we've got loads of those spotty orange flounder lately, but unfortunately no plaice this year as yet either    here's some pics of em and only the top one is a plaice. the plaice don't tend to be that sandy colour, more of a darker brown. p.m. ronald and he''ll be able to tell at first glance
