i wanted to try a west cork estuary for a few flounder and maybe a Bass but wasnt sure about it over all the heavy rain. as a few people said "you'll never know until you go" i decided it was worth a try.
i got there about 2030 and set up the first rod with a 2 hook flapper size 1s baited with crab and cast out. i was just setting up the spinning rod with a running ledger to try and have a bit of craic when i noticed a good pull on the 1st rod. i waited for a 2nd pull and struck. .it was putting up a good scrap and landed a nice little flounder of 35cms. took a while to get the hook out but got a quick photo and sent him back.
things were looking good. i hadnt had a fish on a 1st cast in a while
. i rebaited and sent it back out then finished setting up the 2nd rod. then i noticed the weed. i was pulling in huge lumps of it when i was rebaiting. it was so bad it was even a bit of craic on the spinning rod
. it went quiet after that with no more fish. it got pretty windy around 2130 and with nothing else taking, i packed up 2200. it wasnt a great session but nice to be out till the winds came and at least i didnt blank:

Well done on the flounder. Weed is a problem all over at the moment - I had a look at a few of the East Cork beaches last night and they were totally unfishable.

Nice flounder there Dennis. Was driving around West Cork yesterday and that carpet of fine weed that makes fishing so difficult was everywhere. I find that the weed isn't as bad when you fish the slack tides in the estuary...1 hour before and 2 after low water is best...was there any mullet moving in the estuary???

well done lad, got yourself a nice fish there

, pity about the wind and the weed

, but i'll bet your happy that you decided to give it a bash anyhow. if you're not out ya cant catch them, it's always worth giving it a shot

cheers lads.
i didnt see any mullet there that night but was there a week earlier at low water during the day and it was full of them. lots of sea trout jumping around too. i know i was there at a bad time for an estuary regarding the tide but i wanted to try it at night.
nothing ventured, nothing gained as they say
