Youghal area

Tue Apr 07, 2009 12:04 am

Date: 05.04.2009

People: J. Warner and I

Duration: 15.00 – 18.00

Tide: H.W. 15.04

Weather: F3/4 south westerly

Bait: Crab, razor and rag

Rigs: Me, 3 hook flowing rigs

Results: John 6 flounder myself 10 flounder

Report:
With a shore comp coming up soon it was time to get the feet back on terra firma and see could I remember how to set up a tripod.
I had rambled around the day before but found nowhere that got me motivated :? :? so I ended up getting in some casting practice and boy did I need it.
So after a bit of spinning around Sunday morning watching shoals of small mullet :x :x I ended up in the Youghal area where I met up with John.
John had already been fishing a comp in Monatrae where only 3 anglers had 3 single fish. At least that eliminated one venue so we headed to an estuary spot which often produce fish on the dropping tide.
Fishing about a 40 yards apart, the first half hour had no fish showing. John was on the first flounded a nice fish over the 35cm mark :D . Good enough reason for me to make a move. A steady flow of flounder followed with a couple of doublers coming ashore. :D :D :D :D
All the fish were a good size with most of them over the 40cm mark.
Best fish of the session fell to me a nice 46cm flounder that weighed 1.14kg. :D 8) and just over the specimen weight.

In all not a bad come back that flounder push my specimen species count to 10.
3 from the shore, bass, painted ray and flounder. 7 from the boat, monkfish, pouting, whiting, coalfish, megrim, red gurnard and blonde ray.

Last Sunday week (29th March) I saw a trawler in the inner bay as I was driving along the main Waterford road towards Youghal Bridge, nearly crashed the car as I was trying to see what they were at - I wonder how many bass they "accidentally" caught

OK - so that is what they were at - it was dusk when I was driving past so I couldn't see what they were doing.

Been taking a ribbing for a while because I’ve never caught a specimen flounder.  :x :x Now that I caught one the critics are claiming that it’s not n the old money (3lb.)
For a change I don’t make the rules and “any port in a storm” rules will do fine with me 8) 8) 8)

The amount of good size flounder been caught at the moment is a good omen for things to come. :D :D

Sadly in my reply to “Alandjordan” I was using size 4 hooks    but don’t tell anybody.

Worst still as an angler who claims to be a shore angler I now have only 3 specimen fish from the shore and 7 from the boat.

Long live the lucky boat anglers.     8)

      don't knock the size 4 hooks, we went out to do some flattie bashing using them on 3 hook flappers and landed a half dozen bass in december     yet more proof that fish can't read rig making books

Donal, a specimen from the shore is infinitely more harder to get than a boat specimen....and fewer anglers have them  .
