Report:

Headed to a beach last night for a bit of a session (crabby missus at home... :D ) Nothing too taxing, bit of r and r more than anything else. Pleasure fishing this year has been in short supply and we havent really done a whole pile of it to be honest, results have been none too inspiring either for that matter.

A balmy evening awaited us with a small surf on the beach (too small for the bassies really but you cant have everything) I arrived about a half hour before the lads and tackled up 2 rods, one clipped with a big bait and the other my usual flattie scratcher.

The lads arrived and as they were setting up fish number 1 of the evening, a flounder was slid up the sand. It wasnt long before Lee got in on the action with one himself followed by his first ever trebler :D . The man was on fire and pulled in a small bass at range on razor to add to his tally. Fish were coming steadily on the close in rods with nary a blank cast until the end. A bit of banter of course ensued as it looked like I was about to take a pasting at my own game but things evened up by the finish with a couple of doubles and a treble coming along to help my cause somewhat :D

Funniest moment of the night was my last fish, a small five bearded rockling that had elected to take a full small peeler at distance. This fish had approached the bait from the eye end of the hook, got it in so far and then it stuck with half the 2/0 including bend and point protruding out of his mouth.....idiot.... :D

Great to see the flounder back in numbers, I've missed them this past while. All fish bar two were taken inside 20 yards.

Well done Pete, Lee.
I am sorry I didn't get out now - but I was trying to preserve domestic harmony

What size was the bass?

I had exactly the same thing happen on Monday night - the rockling had stuffed his mouth with so much lug that he couldn't release it when I retrieved
Not the same fish as yours though as it was a different beach.

Yes Pete, great night after all those poor sessions earlier in the year - I love fishing again!

I think I had Pete a little tiny bit worried there for a while, with a treble then a double shot of flats coming in one after the other, but good craic and a good number of fish considering we weren't fishing it hard. All those flattie tips Pete has been giving me are paying off at last :D

Don't worry about Nik, he's a hardcore bassman and wouldn't be wasting his time catching flats , if it's not big and silver it's not worthing catching.

Frank, the bass was relatively small, didn't measure it (or indeed any of the rest of the fish), I'd hazard a guess at the low 30's cm. He had an interesting nick out of his back, not sure if it was a bite, a bird mark or even a lamprey suck mark.

twenty yards  have you been practicing your power casting on the sly  last comp i fished most flats were 20 feet out its very hard to cast so short and look like you really want to get a fish  i,m sure folks walking the beach think anyone casting out like that hasnt a clue :|

Know what you mean roger, gas when people stop to watch you cast and you only drop it 15 yards and then they walk off thinking what a plonker.
