Results: 2 flounder




Report: As sea was very calm I decided to try a rock mark that provides access onto a relatively clean sandy seabed. It was a lovely sunny afternoon and the cliffs behind provided shelter from the rather cool northwesterly breeze.

I set up two rods and brought a spinning rod as well. I did a little lure fishing and plugging between gulleys in the rocks but nothing was biting. There was a shoal of mullet circling around. I tried a bit of spinning around then just in case there was a bass swimming with them but nothing doing.

The bait rods were also quite. The bait was coming back untouched. After about an hour when I was reeling in the three hook flapper to change the bait I spotted a tiny flounder on the lower hook. It was about the smallest flounder I have ever caught, only 14 cm. Unfortunately the photo is out of focus - I guess the fish was too small for the camera to focus properly.

A little later I spotted a slight twitch on the rod with the three hook flapper - this time it was a bigger flounder - 28 cm and quite plump. It had managed to completely swallow the hook. I eventually got it free and the fish seemed to swim away OK after I released it.

The tide was ebbing at this stage and there were no further bites. I thought about staying until dark but decided to go for a pint instead.

I hadn't expected much given the calm conditions and weak tides so I was happy enough with the two flounder, and it was a nice afternoon to relax by the sea and recover from too much beer the evening before (watching the rugby in a pub and then the boxing)

You can't beat getting some fresh sea air when your feeling green around around the gills (pardon the pun) the 2nd Flounder is nice and plump

Great to catch a couple in day light hours. I'm looking forward to skipping off for a few hours during the day in the summer.

Thanks guys, I was feeling a bit hungover in the morning but as soon as I got onto the shore and felt the sea breeze I was back to normal.

well done rockhunter thats a nice plump flounder and a nice pic of the cove.
now thats the best cure for a hangover "the sea air" but not from a boat

Its a good mark alright - I have only fished it a few times and each time the conditions have been very calm. I havn't had a huge haul of fish there but I have never blanked. I reckeon it could be very good with a better surf on a rising tide.

Great little beach. Is that the entire beach in the photo? You wouldn't want too many anglers there at one point!

That's about one third of the beach. Its not easily accessible close to high tide - about half way between high and low tides the water drops enough to get around from the rocks. Initially I fished from the rocks to the right but when the tide dropped enough I moved onto the beach. What I have yet to try is to get in there at low tide and fish the rising tide and wait for it to ebb before getting back out again - I am definitely going to try that some evening when there is a bit of a surf rolling in.

Shane - it is probably not the same ship, or if it is it has definitely moved. When I arrived at the mark it was not there. It appeared on the horizon about an hour or two later then looked to have dropped anchor - it may have been waiting for the next high tide to sail into the harbour.

You seem to be doing OK in Waterford at the moment - I may head over that way in the next few days
