Greystones Rocks At Last! 22/03/2009

Sun Mar 22, 2009 11:31 am

Me and two other lads beside me:

5pm till 11pm:

High at 8:30pm :

Cool dry evening with clear sky:

Mack, Lug and Fat Rag:

2 hook pater, pulley pennel and running ledger:

Dab (1), Sea Scorpion (2), Rocking (3), Whiting (14), and a Poor Cod or Pouting (1):

Having been restricted to Dublin fishing the last few months and nothing short of a disaster last week I finally got a decent session under my belt. I had wanted to try the rocks in Greystones for ages but never made it and somebody beat me to it last week   . And seeing that there were three of us I was not going to invade! So I headed off early and got there about 5ish. My main target tonight was a Coal Fish or Flounder. Two other lads were setting up when I arrived but I squeezed onto a spot just to their right. I was delighted to be setting my Grey’s Apollo M2 that I picked up second hand and in good nick and given it a try. I got my hands on some lovely fat Rag Worm that were very lively on the hooks, so glad there back. So two rods out I sat back and had a coffee. It was a perfect evening and as the sun was going down I got a little knock and reeled in a nice Dab. It took a while to work the hook out but he managed to swim off. My first fish on my new rod so she was surly christened.

As it got dark I went looking for my headlamp, and realised it was in my brothers van from last week. My lantern offered light but being on the rocks I would have liked my headlamp too. The bites started coming then as the tide rose and I picked up a Sea Scorpion Fish on my flapper rig. Followed by another a few minutes later although even smaller. And plenty of whiting to keep me busy. I picked up a couple of doubles but none over my personal best of 27cm though. I got a couple of rockling then and what is either a poor cod or a pouting. Any advice welcomed lads. I’ve been goggling but still cant figure it out. These were all caught on my new rod using a running ledger. I had never caught fish on a running ledger before so I was well chuffed. I finished up at 11 with a double of whiting and rockling. I would have stayed on a bit longer but I was worried that my lantern would run out of oil and I would not know where to put my foot or find my gear to pack up. Also the wind had picked up a bit and one gush took my towel, bit of bait and a rig into the water.

I was delighted to get a decent session under my belt and pick up a few different fish. The Grey’s rod is the business. I tried it on the beach last week and it was good but on rough ground she will take a bit of beating. Just need to learn to cast it now!

Nice session Conor, and there was plenty of room for ye last week   I can cast fairly straight  .Looks like a pouting,,,its a good spot for a few species, eh?I always carry a spare headlamp (or 2!!) just in case. Thats a dodgy spot in the dark, easy to break something.
