Whiterock & Colimore Harbour 1st February

Mon Feb 02, 2009 1:31 pm

People: Two lunatics in a gale

Duration: 8pm – 10pm

Tide: Dropping

Weather: Gale force cross winds. Sleet & snow

Bait: frozen mack, mussel, Sand eel (might as well have been using cardboard)

Rigs: 2 hook flappers, 1 up 1 down (might as well have tied teaspoons to the line)

Results: If you haven’t already gathered: Blankety Blank!

Report: Lunatic No. 1 thought it might be a good idea to try Whiterock. Lunatic No .2 (me) in a state of delusion agreed. Tried it for a hour or so, surf was very rough, wind was blowing a gale and the strong current dragged a 6oz gripper weight so far right, it was probably back up on the beach behind my rod by the time I reeled it in. Lunatic No. 1 didn’t fare much better. To continue the state of delusion it was decided to up sticks and try Colimore Harbour in the vain attempt at avoiding the wind. My first cast (having gone reasonably straight) went immediately to the left. Impossible to tell whether I was seeing a bite or the rod flapping violently in the wind, I picked it up to see and tried to reel it in. It was snagged but I eventually managed to free it and cast again. Meantime lunatic No. 1 cast straight out and amazingly it stayed put. It was left there for some time as we tried to use the wall as cover from the wind (an exercise in futility only surpassed by the very activity in which we were engaged.) Eventually he tried to reel it in and discovered why it hadn’t shot to the left as my first (and subsequent cast had). It was snagged and rig was lost. My second and final cast also go snagged. I managed to retrieve the weight and one (now completely straight) hook.

Miserable, tail & legs are the words which spring to mind!

What can I say? Crazy people ;) Went for a walk with the hounds on killiney beach yesterday. Huge surf and the wind would cut ya in two.
There was loads of what seemed to be mermaids purses scattered along the beach although way bigger than I've seen before and white. See any yourself?

Sounds very much like our evening's entertainment alright.

Didn't notice any Mermaid's purses on Whiterock. Mind you, it is a pretty small beach and I was spending so much time protecting my face and eyes from the sleet and stinging wind there could have been gold nuggets washed up on the shore and I wouldn't have noticed.

Mermaids purses.

Is that what I was catching one time from a charter boat in Dublin. I believe the owner had a different name on them

Grannies F#nn$es.
