Report:we were not supposed to go out today as jason was playing darts for mayo on sunday and they won the comp so a serious drink was had!! His hangovers can be legendary, so no plans were made for today,but i got the call and by half three we were on the road,we were fishing by five,at this stage it was nice and calm with no real wind, and on the first cast i got a scorpion fish and within minutes i had the small pollock,but then the wind picked up and within ten minutes there was a bloody gale blowing!!!Both of us nearly got blown of the pier and of course the fish dissapeared,not a bite,not even a nibble after that! about 7.30 we were just thinking about packing up when davy from the site showed up,it was nice to put a face to the name,so after a bit of a chatter we packed up and left davy to it,hope he has more look than us! sorry no pics,they were not worth taking a pic off

we haven't been out since arklow! can't blame the wives/work either!
i'm heading to wicklow this week to give a talk on scaley creatures of
a different nature but can't bring the rods as i have to head
back to the big smoke for other commitments.
i hate meeting the sea without a cast or two .

stayed on for about an hour an half

fishing picked up no end the minute yous left - doggies huss, ray, monster cod and trebles of bass ... honestly

seriously tho should have left when yous did - not a bite all night, even the crabs didnt like my bait

wind picked up even worse, but at least the rain eased off

still good to get out of the house - and it can only get better next time !

thanks alan that pier is either a feast or a famine,but we keep going back

Fair play to you for catching even a small fish.
I was there on Saturday afternoon for a few hours and got nothing.
The wind was really blowing a gale and at one stage I had to dive across the peir to stop my rods going over the side. I gave up when the wind blew my rod against the wall and broke the lining out of one of the rings.
When your fishing this peir where is the best spot to cast to back into the bay or out from the end of the peir.

I was out westport directly yesterday at low water to survey some new marks for the coming year and found an Englishman fishing one of the channels. Pulled in a double of small flounder whilst I was there using maddies dug locally the day before (nice to know). Reckoned he had lost count of the fish but most in the < 30 cms category. One of 52 but spawned out, which seems a month early to me but there you go. Was out past Castleleaffy...

I have found that straight off the end of the pier, and into the harbour both work equally well. have had doggies, huss, coalies, pouting and whiting. have generally found that there is either a lot of fish about - or nothing at all

out to the left of pier seems to be rough ground - never seen it in daylight, but any casts from the top of the pier in that direction have resulted in tackle losses.

having any luck about the place your self? picked up a decent rockling to save the blank that last night i met yous out at enniscrone - but last time i passed it the pier was blocked with tonnes of rock from those big storms.

Haven't been doing much fishing at all mate, I had one good night at Teeling but the weather was terrible. Glad to here you caught something that night in Enniscrone, you were a brave man to stick the cold that night.

The peir at lecanvey looks very fishy I'm going to give it another bash some evening. Which do you find better there the rise or the drop? I won't get a chance to get out over the next few weeks but give us a shout some time and we'll meet up for a cast or 2, I'll show you a few marks I know around Westport.

personally i've found it fish best on the drop - but dont know if that is typical, an the lads seem to have done well on the rise an around high tide. mostly fished it on the drop as that tied in with darkeness and me being able to get there rather than any preplanned tactics

would like to give the beach there a go in the summer - looks a good spot with the stream coming in and the rocks out to the right.

certainly into exploring that area a bit more once the weather gets a bit less siberian will give you a shout later in the year.

debating whether to give it a go tonite, or whether to light the fire an hide infront of the telly - tough call
