Ballycotton and Garryvoe, 12/01/2009

Tue Jan 13, 2009 12:38 pm

People: me, basslover1 and Nik

Duration: 15:30-22:30

Tide: HW 18:30ish

Weather: some showers, but mainly mild especially in the evening

Bait: razor, squid, sandeel, mackerel

Rigs: flappers, pulleys

Results: me-nothing, Nik-nothing, Kevin - wait for it - a coalfish!

Report: headed out of work early after doing loads extra at the weekend, decided to hit the east cork beaches, but stopped off first at Ballycotton to try and break Kevin's blanking habit. We got a couple of bites and watched as a guy on the breakwater reeled in a number of pin whiting, but all we could manage to land was a crab.

While we were there, an Examiner photographer was there and he took our pics for the weather photo on the back page which we appear in today. I was deemed too ugly for the pic obviously and they went with my hands filleting a mackerel instead

We met a few other anglers down there as we were leaving had a chat and then headed off to Garryvoe around 6ish. Surprisingly small surf given the weather over the weekend. Very quiet. No discernible bites. Nik joined us later, in time for the momentous occasion when Kevin finally broke his blank on his new rod and caught himself a nice coalfish. Just managed to pass the blanking onto me  . A lot of people would have given up before he did, so I'd say he'll have no worries now, he'll be flying soon with that kind of enthusiasm.

The weed moved in about 3-4 hours after high so we gave it up and went home.

Thats great news, I was feeling sorry for the poor guy but had to admire his persistance. Hopefully he will be on a roll now :D :D

Thanks for the kind words lads, yes finally the blank is over and the reel is ok too (in my enthusiasm i through down the rod and reel when i was unhooking the fish and the waves pushed sand into every nook and cranny but a shot in the shower when i got home fixed it) i must thank lee for his persistence even though now he might have caught the blanking bug off me, thanks also to pete and nik. I'm sure we'll all have much better sessions but nothing will compare to the feeling of seeing that fish in the surf in the moon light beautiful. :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D :D

Lee,
You were getting the shelter from Ballycotton Island 'cause over in Ballinwilling and Ballycrennane the surf was massive last night.

Was that your lights we could see off in the distance then Pat? Were you not plagued with weed down there? Hope you got on better than us. Some guys were fishing in front of the hotel and then moved up beyond us because of the weed. Surprising how much shelter the island actually gives, you can just make out the surf in the picture with Kevin and it flattened out even more after that.

That was my light alright, although there were three others for awhile. The weed was a disaster. Lost 5 rigs before I eventually was forced to go. Fished a beach further West last night. Got about an hour in before the weed moved in. Then, no matter if you casted near or far, you hit weed. Lost 2 more rigs  . Not a great start to the year. :(
