Report:
Had planned to head out sunday morning to try somewhere north of dublin, but work commitments meant I couldnt get out saturday to get bait, or sunday to fish, so decided on a bit of a whim to take a trip out late saturday evening, so had to raid the freezer of what little bait I had.
Wind was strong, but coming over my shoulder from behind, so it wasnt too much of an inconvenience. The weed however was a different story, every cast resulted in weed around the line, the surf was quite strong even on the ebb, and this just pushed the weed up the line - it was a struggle to hold bottom because of the weed, but it wasnt smothering the hooks so I though it worth sticking out.
Second cast got the wee bass, and this merely served to give me false hope of a few fish.
Glad to get a bass so early in the year, it took me till august I think last year to get my first.
It wasnt to be my night unfortunately, for the main part the baits came back untouched. Tried a variety of distances and bait combo's (only so many ways you can cocktail 3 baits though), the strong wind from behind me made casting easy, a gentle lob with the flapper saw it sailing out over a 100 yards or so at times. Even upped the size of the bait on the pulley rig to see could I tempt out a nice coalie, they just dont seem to be around this beach anymore. I'm told it used to be a hotspot for them.
Got the whiting (38cm) on my 3rd to last cast, and had pretty much decided that I was heading home soon.
Interesting to see the demographics of the beach change with the wind and strong surf, the stream that usually breaks out to your right here, was well out to the left and almost following the hw mark towards Bray, parallel to the surf. When I arrived, the beach to the left side of the stream was completely unfishable and I had to wade through the stream and out to the righhand side, the stream was well upto waist height, the deepest I've ever seen it here. Thankgod I had my waders on.
I'd say give this beach a miss for a few days until the weed eases off.
