Well done shoreking. The Bass need not worry last night from me, I blanked on Clonea beach. I know I am not the only one, but one of the few brave enough to say it. I fished with fresh crab and razor, ledgering along the beach. I meet another guy on the castle side who had nothing when I left him but I think he was planning to stick it out for longer. Conditions were not to bad, a small moderate surf, plenty of movement in the water and wind from the southwest. I was blaming the neap tide, as I had to blame something other than my own lack of ability. I am determined to put things right soon.

Make sure you bring plenty. Lots of kg's could be needed. And lugs.

top one is definitely a shore - very hard to call the second onewith out seeing the barbels
generally i find (i catch a lot of rockling when im meant to be fishing for bass, thornies, cod etc. you get the picture) that 5 beards are smaller - i would have called the second a shore also on first view

Err,
they r just rockling to me, but i should learn the difference. Wots the best way to tell between the diff species for future ref.

shore rockling has 3 barbels - 5 beard rockling has 5 barbels
then just to confuse matters - there is also a 3 bearded rockling - but this is generally much bigger than the other two and is definitely got large mottling or patches on it - usually of a more orange brown colour with darker spots
i have found you only get the 3 beards over rougher ground and deeper water
most of the time its the shore or the 5 beard that you get
check out ronald and steves mini species pdf on the site - do a search - will probably explain it a lot better
i would love to have your problem shore king - instead of knowlegdge of tiddlers cause i never seem hook into anything decent!!!

errrr actually the top one is a 5 beard, look at the colour, 5 beards dont vary that much there almost always sub 20cm and sandy in colour, the bottom one is a shore rockling, the coloration is spot on as is the size, how many five beards have you seen that are 28cm long?
