Silverstrand, Galway 27.11.08

Fri Nov 28, 2008 1:29 am

People: nige and myself

Duration: 15:00 - 20:30

Tide: HT @ 16:55

Weather: everything possible from sun to hail stones

Bait: lug, mackerel sandeel & squid

Rigs: various

Results: 2 flounder (one was caught on rod and line the other by hand)

Report: Nige and myself had arranged to meet up with two guys to introduce them to sea angling. Nige had dug some lug earlier in the day and we hit Silverstrand with good expectations. When we arrived we were met with winds force 6-7 & crashing waves pushing the tide in at an extremely fast rate. At one point we had to stop fishing from around 16:00-18:00 as the waves were breaking over the sea defences and right up to the top of the steps  We probably would've headed off to try a different mark at this point but we were waiting on the two lads. Who never showed up in the end  probably had more sense than to come out in that weather!! Once the tide started to drop off we started fishing again and the wind dropped a bit too. Nige had his line washed in tight to the boulders and had to pull for a break it was starting to look like one of those days. We stuck at it and when the tide had dropped a bit more we moved on to the beach nige spotted his rig in the water close to where originally got snagged and plucked it from the water to find the rig intact with a nice flounder attached. A stroke of luck for the fish and nige :) the wind was gusting really strong one min then non existant the next :? We fished the dropping tide chasing it all the way down the beach in hope more than anything. We decided to pack up just as an almighty hail stone shower rained down upon us, then a shout of "thanks be to jaysus" blank saved as i reeled in a nice plump flounder. Must say it was very tough going but still beats sitting in watching tv :)
