People:me and big mick

Duration:3-30pm-8-30pm

Tide:high at 6-30pm approx

Weather:dd cold breeze, rolling seas, drizzle

Bait:rag,mussel,squid and frozen mack.
dd
Rigs:flappers

Results:me,1 dab,1 coalie,1 shore rockling,13 whiting,,,,,big mick, 3 whiting

Report:Headed to Greystones after work with big mick, stopping in Bray to get bait. Had to think twice about it when we got to Greystones as the sea was very rough with waves crashing in. We decided against our first option, the steps, as that spot was taking the full brunt of the waves and we would have got soaked at high water, and set up across the cove on higher ground on the rock ledges. We were more sheltered here from the north westerlies . I set up on a slightly lower ledge than big mick ,and paid the price later   . Almost immediately i was into whiting ,which took all combinations of bait, mostly rag tipped with squid. I got a shock when baiting up when a big wave crashed in and gave me a good soaking, washing most of the bait away, luckily enough i was able to gather it back up  . I had good waterproofs which kept me dry but must really invest in some good warm fishing clothing. I hadnt enough layers on and later on the cold started to wear me down. I had to move the gear back a bit but it wasnt dangerous or anything, just when the waves crashed into the rocks it sent a big spray in our direction. Shamoo (Mark), dropped by on his way to another mark, and by that stage i had 6 fish, with big mick waiting on his first. It was 6-30pm before big mick finally reeled in his first fish, a whiting, and our mini comp ended 16-3 to me 8) . I got a small liveley coalie on the small rod, in close, which took mussel, but had to put that rod away as conditions were too bad to be looking after 2 rods. A dab and a rockling completed my species tally for this session as it was too rough at the base of the rocks to be hunting small fish.I got a fair few soakings throughout the session and it was only when i got home and unpacked the gear that i fully realised how wet everything was. We were glad we didnt set up at the steps as we looked across the cove,  ,,, it was disappearing every now and again under water  . Things quietened down (for me) for the last couple of hours after high water and the mack on its own didnt seem to be attracting anything but mick got another two whiting  , which left him a happy camper and we headed off at 8-30pm for food and warmth   .
Dave,,,,,,ps ,, im guessing a coalie by the straight lateral line and the shape of the tail??????

Well done eyes you were kept on your toes between the waves and the fish anyway. I have never fished greystones before might take a trip up that neck of the woods sometime later in the month !

so i went and got myself one of them floatie suits, better safe than sorry. every time i wear it i am sitting sweating like a pot roast
but thats better than crying like a brass monkey

Another good session there Dave. I never made it to Newcastle last night in the end. We opted for a different spot close by we fished before.

I didnt have much joy myself Dave.

I had set up and was fishing around 6pm, lost one rig to each rod on my first cast due to big rafts of weed. By the time I had re-rig etc it was 7pm really by the time I had actually started to fish

There was plenty of weed in the water causing 3 more lost rigs throughout the evening.

I got 2 codling, 5 rockling and 9 whiting, quite a disappointing session really as I didnt pack up until 11.45pm :!:

Suprised at the lack of coalies and flounder :? :? :?

Like you, I got caught out by one particularly large wave..... you think I'd learn

If you check ebay, you'd pick up a sundridge floatie for around €100 delivered, you can chose between 1 or 2 piece.

Ah come on now, thats unfair....I have it on good authority that those pic's were taken on foreign shores

Well now, the one thing I've learnt (aside of better ways/places to catch fish), is that you've gotta raise your expectations, strive for a more rewarding session than the last one so to speak, and to be honest, I've not done too bad to say I've only been at this catching (or is that fishing :? ) lark since march this year.

any size to the codling?

Oh yeh, there was some size to them Dave

1) 14cm
2) 17cm

No after all the help yourself and shamoo gave me I was all ready. The plan was to finish work at 10 and head straight out. I only got out at 12:45!!!!!!!! Then I could not get any rag. Mind you I got my hands on some peeler crabs and the fish market had mack. I did have some lug but where I fished its not the best bait to use. I might be able to get off work for a while on Thurs and collect some before next Friday.

Funny I got whiting, small dabs and a rockling all on the mack. Showed no interest in the lug at all. Oh and I have a permission slip from herself for a weekend down in Wexford in two weeks so I'm looking forward to getting back down there for some night fishing.

Again thanks for the help lads.

Hi eyesreilly,

just read a couple of your reports and must say they are really great. Just started seafisihing (did coarse fisihing before) this year, so still quite new to the game :? Fished a couple of times on dollymount strand and dun laoghaire with no huge success so far  (dogfish, flounder very small bass and of course some mackerel). I´d like to try greystones soon (am not very familiar with the area) and I was wondering if u might have same advice for me where to fish (south or north beach?), about bait, tide etc. :?:

I´d be very grateful if you could give me some information to get started there.

thanks a mill

Michael
