East Cork rock mark - 1st November 2008

Duration: 4.30 - 9.00 pm
Tide: HW at 7.00 pm
Weather: Clear, cold, light NE wind
Bait: Rag, mackerel, mussel
Rigs: 3/0 pennel pulley, size 1 and 4 single hook flappers
Results: 1 flounder, 2 dogfish
Report: Headed to a rock mark that would be sheltered from the cold NE wind. As I was climbing down the cliffs I could see several fish swirling about in the crystal clear water - from 20 feet up I thought they were bass and nearly fell down the rest of the way as I was in such a hurry to get down and set up. But when I got onto the edge of the shore I realized they were mullet
I set up two rods, one with the 3/0 pennel baited with rag and mackerel and the other with the size 4 hook baited with mussel. I did a bit of spinning for a while with a third rod but had no bites.
The bait rods were quite until after dark. The water was very calm, and clear, I guess it was too still, a bit of turbulence would have stirred up the sediment and might have brought the fish in.
Just after dark I got the first bite - a small flounder of about 26 cm taken on the 3/0 pennel baited with rag/mackerel.
It was quite for about an hour after that. Then I got a dogfish again on the 3/0 pennel. This was followed by another dogfish about half an hour later.
Shortly after that I decided to pack up. Not a particularly productive session but it is a mark I think would fish much better under different weather conditions.

Always a shame that the nice weather for us never seems to be the nice weather for fish

At least you managed to catch given the motionless water.... just thinking bring some bread next time too and give the mullet a go be a bit of craic

Its a pity we didn't get a few calm days like that during the summer. There was a great mark for reasonable size pollock that I fished last year in West Cork but couldn't get near it this year at all.

I will have to do that - they were on the feed too - when I got down to the shore there was a lot more of them than I could see from higher up the cliff, at least 100 and some big ones too - 6-8 pounders I would guess. They were going a few laps around the little bay, leaping out the water occasionally.
