People:me and big mick

Duration:12pm-5pm

Tide:high 1pm

Weather:dd n.e.breeze, chilly, dry

Bait:rag,frozen mack
dd
Rigs:flappers

Results:me, 2 flounder,1 five bearded rockling...big mick, 2 flounder, 2 whiting, 4 coalies.

Report:After seeing the coastal weather report ( slight to moderate seas  ) we were shocked to see big waves breaking over the rocks at greystones, throwing up a lot of spray. As we were quite high up we decided to set up anyways and try our luck.We were well wrapped up (we needed to be  ) and settled into our first real winter session. Bite detection was non existant unless you held the rod in your hands, and your fingers quickly got numb doing this. Big Mick was first off the mark with a nice whiting, soon followed by another. Despite the conditions things were looking ok for a few fish and we were delighted to see another couple of anglers setting up near the harbour railings proving that we werent the only crazies in the village  . I didnt get a bite for most of the afternoon which gave big mick the opportunity to rub the old salt in to me as he continued to catch regularly. He deserved whatever he caught as he was constantly being sprayed with sea salt as the waves crashed in. His best catch was a 32 cm coalie, but in all he got 2 whiting, 2 dabs, and 4 coalies (32,20,19,18). Things were looking bad for me and i was about to call it a day when i changed direction with my cast (why didnt i try this earlier :? ) and soon after landed a small flounder 16cm, followed next cast by another one ,20cm, then 5 bearded rockling 20cm(probably wrong i.d. ). The sense of relief that coursed through me after catching that first small flounder surely wasnt natural!!! I didnt care how many big mick caught, i had caught a tiny flounder,, whoopee!!!   . Is it healthy that i'm looking forward to more of these sessions, cold, windy, and wet. Ps met some more guys from the site, hello to the codfather, and the cod-daughter, and to poloxdave, who sadly lost a nice conger??-eel to some sharp rocks on the way up    .

Good session guv. That spot does seem very particular as in fish seem concentrated in very small pockets. As you were saying a change of direction of only a few feet can produce the goods especially in rough conditions. Probably the way the current moves the food supply in the cove.

Feeshy.

Well done for sticking it out in those conditions.

At least you were getting some surf - it was dead calm down on the south coast over the weekend - I've seen bigger waves on a lake.
