People: mga & myself

Duration: 19:30-04:00

Tide: LW @ 22:45

Weather: lovely night for fishing

Bait: mackerel & sandeel

Rigs: one up one down, animal rigs, pennel pully, two hook bomber

Results: dogs & huss...... and a regurgitated eel??

Report: mga called over to the farm to drag my lazy ass outta bed (all the fishing was catching up with me  ) we decided to head local and try for huss in salthill. We set up one rod each and cast out. It was a nice evening for fishing the sea was calm with just the movement of the tide rippling the surface clear skies with the odd passing cloud. I got a hit after about 5mins first dog showed, i set up my spinning rod to try for some fresh bait gave about a dozen or so casts when i heard someone talking...sounded like it was coming from the water?? turned on the big headlamp to see two nutters swimming in the pitch dark right in front of us we had been set up for probably half and hour at this stage surely they saw us?? they got nearly as much of a fright as me when my string of lures hit the water close to them before i spotted them  packed away the spinning rod after that. We were getting bites constantly i think nearly every cast produced a fish or a series of good hits resulting in mangled baits. With the doggie count building up mga went to the waters edge to reel in another fish when a shout of "the huss are in" could be heard :D i went closer for a decco and a nice huss came to shore target species accquired 8) mga then put out a mackerel head on a size 6 to see if another huss would play ball. Meanwhile i got a very aggressive bite which stood out from the previous doggie bites. Was thinking huss struck into the fish and had it on for about 30 secs felt it get off reeled in to find a whole eel that looked like it had been in a fishes stomach for a couple of days attached to the hook bizzare the eel was hooked just under the chin. I actually thought i'd got a mini species till i took a closer look at it. Any ideas what fish it could have been?? the eel had no teeth marks and looked like it'd been swallowed whole. We continued to pull in dog after dog and on the last cast we both finished with a fish mga with a dog and me with a small huss :) all in all a good nights session will try it again soon with some squid baits for more huss  We both got into double figures of fish caught it was hard to keep track of all the dogs!!

Wonder if the eel was taken by a Cormorant. I heard they sometimes regurgitate fish after digesting the slime from them.

Aye the swimmers were a bit cracked alright, was thinking if they got into trouble nobody would be able to see them, takes all sorts i guess

Wasn't sure on the id of the regurgitated fish as the skin had been mostly digested anybody got any suggestions as to what would swallow it whole and spew it back up when trying to spit out the hook?? I was thinking a huss or dog fish would've left teeth marks on it from tearing at it. Maybe a pollack perhaps??
