Beara Peninsula, West Cork, 15th-20th September 2008

Duration:15th September-20th September

Tide:High tide ranged from 06:00 to 08:00 in the mornings and 18:00 to 20:00 in the evenings over the week.

Weather:Absolutely beautiful. The locals informed us that the day we arrived was the first day they'd seen sunshine in weeks. It kept up for most of the week too

Bait: Lug,rag,mackerel,squid,crab,sandeel and razor.

Rigs:Pennels,basic one hook ledgering rigs,2 hook paternosters and various lures including kiltys,tobys and Lucky craft plugs etc.

Results:Numerous pollock up to 10lb,1bull huss of approximately 8 to 9lb,numerous mackerel,numerous wrasse up to 4.5lb,a couple of small conger and numerous dogfish.




Report:We only had 6 different species. That's pretty unusual. We'd normally catch 8 to 10 different species down here. Not a bad trip though. Pictures to follow soon. One of the big disappointments of the trip was the absence of bass.

Decent stamp of Pollack and Wrasse with a 9lb Huss not bad going Like you said very strange no Bass showed for you any ideas as to why they weren't playing ball?

Well to be fair we didn't really hit the optimum locations for them.
We also didn't fish the optimum locations at the advised times, so I suppose we have ourselves to blame to a certain extent.
In saying that we did see literally hundreds of huge shoaling mullet no matter where we went on the peninsula. We didn't bring any mullet gear and we didn't plan to fish for them so we didn't. It would've been some crack though, especially if we hooked one or two!
I hooked one by accident and it gave me an almighty 13 second scrap before it came off.

We'll have to target the bass some other day.
