Report: Really wanted to hit Benone in search of a big bass but when i got up on Sat morning and saw how nice the weather was decided to give Benone a miss as i thought it might be packed with folk making the most of the nice day.

Picked Jonny up and we decided on White park bay.

When we arrived at the carpark we could see that there was a nice surf running and the place looked very promising so we grabbed the gear and made the long walk down to the beach.

We set our gear up as quickly as we could and whacked out our first casts.

We then learnt a very valuable lesson. Which if i'm honest i've learnt a few times before and still forget! Look closely before you start to fish!!!!

While we were waiting for a bit we could see that there was a load of weed in the waves as they broke. Not good.

I gave my first cast about 20mins then decided to check it. There was so much weed attached that i could hardly move it. After some struggling the line snapped.

My other bait was closer in so i decided to have a look at this. I got this one in but it was totally clogged with weed.

Jonny was having similar problems so we decided to have some scran then head to Portrush and give the rocks near the tennis courts a bash. When Jonny brought his gear in the lucky git had a 7" flounder attached after which he says that he thought he spotted some bites. Yeah right!

Made the short drive to Portrush and this time went and had a look before getting the gear out.

Some guy's were already there and were catching mackeral. We had a quick chat with them and aparently the place had been mad during the week with mackeral everywhere.

Got the gear set up and we both put out flappers with mackeral and rag and set the other rods up with feathers.

I managed a pollock of about 1.5lbs and then i got a couple of mackeral all on the feathers while Jonny managed to snag the weed and lost his set.

We were getting bites on the bait rods but nothing was hooked.

Three guys arrived just after 8 and started fishing for conger. One of them landed a nice looking fish of about 7lbs but i didnt see any others caught.

The sea started off pretty calm but by high water there was a serious swell running in and a couple of the waves that hit towards 23:00 came right up close to us, and we were set up about 30 feet above the water.

We didn't manage any fish on the bait rods, not even a doggie! So after loosing every set of gear on our last 5 casts we decided we'd had enough. Went back to the car and made a cuppa, had a smoke and chatted to a cop that was waiting for trouble to kick off when the bars chucked out before heading home.

It was great to be out fishing as usual but i think i'm due a good session as the last couple have been pretty poor.

Bad luck with the weed at Whitepark Bay, I have been thinking about trying the place myself. I have heard the walk is a bit of a killer!! Well done on the Pollock.

Cheers mate. Give it a go. I love the place. The fishing can be great. I've had bass off it and my wee bro even caught a mullet. I saw a nice sea trout taken too.

The walk is a killer so travel light. Most people would tell you to fish to the right of the river but i've always prefered to go to the left and i haven't done too badly.

Never ssen weed so bad at the place but it will clear and Nov and Dec seem to be pretty good for bass there and on the plus side most of the time you'll have the beach to yourself

sounds like you had a well travelled day in search of fish :| :| :| :| pity about loosing all the tackle thow. but as henry gilbey says " if you're fishing in the right place you're either gonna catch fish or loose tackle" but well done for sticking it out lads
