South Bull Island, Dublin, 16-08-08

Sun Aug 17, 2008 12:45 pm

People: Me

Duration: 22.30-01.00

Tide: HW around 00.30

Weather: Windy, heavy showers

Bait: Peeler, Rag, Sandeel

Rigs: (2 x) 3 hook flappers

Results: 4 Eels

Report: After reading a few recent reports of good bass catches(not on this beach though), I thought I'd give them another bash. If nothing more I was expecting a few flatties.

Arrived to find the beach with a reasonable surf on it so was reasonably optimistic.

Not much to report really though, them damn pesky crabs were straight into the rag and sandeel baits, and its wasnt long before the eels were making a mess of any rigs baited with crab.

I had read recently that lads in the UK (around the thames estuary mainly) specifically target the eels and peeler is the best bait, these lads must be mad thats all I can say.

My first eel caught tonight had a bit of a novelty factory to it, you know, my first of the species caught and all that.....blank saved also, however after eel number 4 I'd had enough. Biggest of the night was around 100cm.

I couldnt get rag and sandeel baits past the crabs all night, and couldnt get the crab baits past the eels. Weed wasnt too bad so thats something I suppose, found a spot to fish from out of the wind and rain for the main part aswell, so at least I was warm and dry.

But no BASSSSS :( :( :( :( :(

It was a big eel alright, but could just as easy have been 90cm or 110cm

I kinda had to judge it based on my own height, but thats not too easy with a fish that refuses to stay straight

Dave, I fished out of the "mens bathing shelter" out onto dollymount beach. I was gonna fish from the wooden bridge end, but the wind and rain made my mind up for you. The spot I chose was well protected from the elements.

You heading out today Dave :?:
