Report: Having heard severe weather warning on the radio earlier in the morning I was hesistant about going out at all. There was a bit of rain around lunch time. But the afternoon seem OK - got to the beach - blue sky out to sea with just a few clouds   In fact it was sunny all day - maybe there was ten minutes when the sun was behind a cloud.
There was a good surf rolling in and the beach was almost weed free.
I set up two rods with rag and razor and cast out. After about 3/4 of an hour I put the size 1 three hook flapper on a shorter rod and cast in into the suds hoping for flounder. About 30 minutes later there was a strong knock on the shorter rod - I had a bite - it was putting up a bit of a fight - I was thinking big flounder - but then got a pleasent surprise as I hauled a bass out of the surf    It was 51 cm and weighed just over 3 lbs. Taken on rag.
Later there was a small tap on the same rod - I started to retrieve and thought it was a missed bite but at the end of the trace was a tiny flounder - about the smallest I have ever caught, less than 20 cm.
There were no more bites after that. The other two rods were untouched.
But I was happy - that was my first bass since the end of the ban - I was almost ready to give up on that beach, it was good in April but since then all I had managed to catch there had been dogfish and the odd flounder.
And it turned out to be a glorious day not what I was expecting at all.
