Report: Took advantage of the fine day and arranged to meet Neil in Wicklow Harbour. We had decided(Neil decided  ) that it was too calm for ennerilly so we set up on the wall in the Harbour. Weather was great with a slight breeze at our backs . Neil was first off the mark as usual with a nice pollock . We were glad to see there were fish about as we hadnt gone to our usual spot under the lighthouse cos we were expecting the mack bashers to arrive .Surprisingly there werent too many about. Some kids got a few but not in any numbers.

An hour into the session I got my first fish, a thornback ray (small but beautiful, like meself   ). The wall was quite high where we were fishing , and as i reeled in the fish turned upside down and i could make out the unmistakable shape of a ray in the water   . I was very excited but prayed that he wouldnt come off the hook on the long haul up the wall. I suppose if he had been any bigger he could have slipped off and i wouldnt have got my first ray  . Seemingly these are few and far between here so i was lucky .

I was really chuffed and would have been more than happy with just the ray but it was to be one of those great nights when every cast produced something  . Neil had 3 rods and was testing out his new multi, sending feathers out about 150 yds with a 3oz lead. While he was showing it to a passing angler i was quietly getting on with the fishing and felt a take as i retrieved a bait. I knew there was something substantial on the end of the line and after a decent scrap ( i think every take is a bass!!! ) i hauled up my biggest coalie so far this year, estimated 2 lbs by Neil,i wouldnt have a clue. We both differed on the i.d. of this fish, Neil thought it was a pollock,i thought a coalie, ,,,,, but i'm writing the report so its a coalie till i'm corrected by the esteemed members of the site   . Neil then caught a pouting , the first i've seen, and we both caught at least half a dozen decent whiting. All in all a great nights fishing 8) . The only hiccup was on the way home when a truck decided to make contact with my car as i sat in traffic but funny enough i still went to bed happy after my fishing fix

Nice fishing Dave, good to get your fist ray, I'm chuffed for you.

I have heard alright that you can get the ray of the piers there, but until now I put it down to being an old fishermans tale....... Good to know there was truth to the stories.

Nice coalie as well, just suprised I aint caught one yet :?
