Mon Aug 04, 2008 1:07 pm

People: Myself and mate Huey

Duration: Mid-day - 5.30pm

Tide: High to falling

Weather:Sunshine for most, with one VERY heavy shower!

Bait: Rag, Lug and Feather Lures

Rigs: Pulley rig's, 2 hook Flappers, Simple One Hooks.

Results: Mackerel, Pollock, Goldsinny wrasse, pouting, poor cod.

Report:

Went out on Friday night to dig some rag and lug regardless of the heavy rain during the afternoon, most casts had been washed away with rain so we were digging "blind". After 3/4 of an hour and a near run in with the local cops we had plenty of rag for a whole day's fishing.

Saturday turned out to be a nice day so we happily made our way down ton the harbor with full intentions of using the rag and lug from the off. However, when we arrived down at the mack strand the first "batch"of mack had just been landed, so it was on with the feathers. And wouldn't you know 2nd cast and I had my 1st decent mack of the year! We continued on with the feathers for the best part of 3 hours racking up a total of 8 macks on the feather. With Huey getting his first ever full house (I am still waiting) he was a happy man!

After all our good fortune we turned to the rag and lug on simple one hooks and flappers for a bash at the wrasse feeling confident for more success. We were not wrong, with every cast came a bite or a catch. Lots of goldsinny and small Pollock fell to the lug, I also got a nice mack fishing hard on the bottom with a simple one hook which pleased me. Huey enjoyed the wrasse for a while longer before switching to the feathers which resulted in yet more mack!

I thought it was time to bring the float out to use the remaining lug, on my second cast I caught I nice Pollock meters from the shore which put up a nice fight on its way in, which for me rounded off an enjoyable days fishing.

A great day was had by all (especially us "beginners") nice fish being caught all over the harbor.

Thanks guys, yea was definately an enjoyable session, with plenty of action. Alastair of course, I should have put 2 and 2 together, but I was looking out for the young'un as well. Yea I seen you nab a few mack early on, I spoke 2 ya on the way down as you were setting up on the mack strand, asking if there was anything about, you remember? What did the old harbour fish like, did ya get into any ballan? I was hoping for a ballan but no joy. Unlucky about the local kids they were pesterign you for worm and hooks if I remember correctly

I think we will be heading out to either Bangor or further on round the coast to Dee on Sat afternoon and possibly Sunday. If your up for it Alastair, and any others for that matter.

Cheers

Jonny

yeah' lots of ballen in the old harbour but even more corkwing  i made the mistake of showing the kids where to fish, then tied their rigs, then gave them hooks, then they needed bait    but they were amazed they got fish where i told them where they would be, so they stuck to me like glue     . but hey it's funny how history repeats it's self. i remember when i was a nipper doing the same thing      but every one was catching so a good time was had by all :D only got in this morning at 4am after a trip to d.dee, it fished quite well and i'll post a report today when i resize the pics. as for d.dee we're going down on friday to fish the north pier. we'll need to arive at low tide to get over to it and fish it right through the tide cycle until low again so we can get across the harbour back onto dry land :D :D . we always said we were gonna do it, but just never got round to it
