People: Myself and corbyeire
Duration: 19.45-10.45
Tide: HW at 16.35
Weather: Fine, calm
Bait: Manky rag and mack
Rigs: 3 hook flappers
Results: 2 Bass for me, corbyeire just glad to be out
Report: Decided to try a new mark for a change, expecting a few flatties if nothing more. Hell of a walk (30 mins+) to get to the mark, and was just glad to see something that look fishable.
We had both baited up and cast out in good time, but it was fairly evident that the weed was gonna be a problem as we could see rafts of the stuff sweeping out in front of us on the tide.
First cast for both of us resulted in a stone of weed each.
Second cast for me got me my first ever Bass (well 2 actually on the 3 hook flapper), the walk to the mark was now well worth the effort  :D :D :D
One around 30cm, the other just over at 43cm.
The smaller fish swam away to fight another day, and I tried to do the decent thing with the bigger fish by putting him back....4 attempts to put him back and everytime he floated to the surface belly up. The fishing god's must have wanted me to have him for the table, and who was I to argue.
Not much to report after that, a few fish breaking the surface close into us, small bass or mullet maybe :?
The weed eased off, but as it did the crabs came on the feed heavily and were to prove a problem all evening. We had to resort to rebaiting every 10 minutes to give ourself's a chance of a fish, but it wasnt to be.
Atleast I broke the Bass duck, so it wasnt a bad ole night really

Well done on your first Bass Sham,
that must have been 1 hell of a fight 2 fish that size flying allover the place
i had 2 small trout on ( browns ) and they went crazy i was sure that i had a monster on... i can only imagine what they must have felt like.
did they take the mackerel or rag or was it a cocktail of both,

Thanks steve, I sure will, I've certainly put in the hours to get them, but isnt it just the way it goes, you get 'em when you least expect it :?
Mann, they both took the rag, if I'm honest the fight was a little difficult to judge really given the amount of weed in the swim.
There was a couple of times both myself and corbyeire thought we had fish on, but it turned out to be weed...probably just the strong current pulling against it that made it feel like the thump of a fish :?

as mark said i was delighted to get out and delighted for him - get the monkey off your back finally
what should be more of note is the logic of choosing this mark and how you thought it could provide a result - your learning fast!
see it turns out their a fish just like the rest of them not some mythical beast

Thanks Donogh, as Brian said, just nice to get that monkey of my back really, I've put more time into targetting the Bass than any other fish this year, and along pop's a double-shot, not a bad way to experience your 1st bar of silver.
I only started sea angling in March this year so its just nice to work my way through a few different species & marks, I'm certainly learning a broad range of skills that way.
Conger, huss, tope, mullet & cod are all next on the list, but not necessarily in that order
Just hope they dont prove quite as elusive (or expensive  ) to hunt down as the bass.

Good on ya, Mark, well done   . You wait for ages and then two come along at the same time   . That list gets longer and longer

Just like Dublin buses
Thanks Dave, I'm heading down to Wexford for the weekend, so I'm gonna try Clones strand to try and get me some more smoothies (hopefully a little bigger than my 1st one  )
You been out lately?
Fri Jul 25, 2008 6:32 pm
Well done!
Congrats on your first bass! You have to figure out which one of them was actually the first one. ;)
My small suggestion would be, try not to wallow them in mud next time  It’s not good for the fish if you intend to release it and it is not looking great on photo either.
