People:11
Duration:10pm - 2am
Tide:h/w 0155
Weather:clear skies slight breeze
Bait:mackerel, sandeel, squid, lug, crab
Rigs:various
Results:19 fish (mainly dogs, a few eels and a 9lb painted ray)
Report:The sky was fairly clear - so no rain. The wind was almost no existent - so no surf. A lot of weed was piled up near the top of the shoreline but there didnt seem to be any in the water itself. As we got started the sun was going down and within half an hour we were fishing in darkness. It was patchy enough for the first hour with only a couple of fish caught, but after an hour and a half of darkness things started to pick up with a few guys on the far left of the slip catching eels and dogs. This continued for the next hour and a half up until the last hour of the filling tide, when it got really patchy.
Not a bad comp - 9 out of 11 finished with fish, the winner had 5 dogs and a painted ray just under 9lb. i have a feeling that if we had a bit more wind we would have caught more. Ken Hogan's painted ray broke up the dogs and eels.
The following day another club held a comp on the same beach in daylight and caught nothing.
Thanks to Structural Glazing Specialists for sponsoring this competition and to James Kirwan in particular.
The top 5 were as follows - 1st Jamie Santry (5 dogs), 2nd Mick Maher ( 4 dogs ), 3rd Cliff Gallogley ( 3 dogs ), 4th Brendan O'Regan ( 2dogs ), 5th Ken Hogan ( painted ray 54 cm wingspan )
