BASS CLUB COMP Tourig Estuary, Co Cork

Sun Jun 29, 2008 11:35 pm

People: 13?

Duration:10:30 am to 2:30pm

Tide:

Weather: overcast and sunny

Bait:Crab, lug and rag

Rigs: 3 hook and 2 hook paternosters

Results: Only one flounder for me (31cm) on second cast, and not a touch thereafter.

Report:3 fish won overall, 2 flounder and a Bass just to size. Fishing was patchy and the weed was a nightmare, if you didn't get a bite within 5 mins your chance of getting anything with the weed, mud and crabs wasn't much. To make matters worse one side of my face looks like I stuck it into a blast furnace. It was one of those days the sun keep threatening to come out and you in and out of rain-gear. I didn't take any pictures of fish as any caught around me were all caught within the first couple of casts and I wasn't organized enough to get the camera out at the time. I did take a pic of some of the competitors in action. Looks more like river comp than the anything you would expect in a sea angling club. Till the next time. Thomas may fill in the gaps.

There were 16 people there, and 12 of the 16 had fish.
As the above picture was taken i was trying to navigate my way thru pot holes and trenches to get to my peg. This was my fault because we have been averaging 13 anglers in the last few comps so i only put out 14 pegs, peg 15 is just in the picture and i was peg 16 - i had my own little island because of the trenches!
There were 2 bass of 1 1/2 - 2lb caught and all the rest were flounder. This can be a nice spot for pleasure fishing but due to the spotty catches ( 2 threes, 2 twos the rest were singles ), the amount of leafy/green weed and the hill we all had to face afterwards to get to the cars, i dont think we will be using this as a venue next year.
On the plus side - It was an experimental venue and 12 out of 16 had fish. Plus due to the fact that i had to go up that hill 4 times i think i lost a few pounds.
On the negative side - There were mostly singles caught. The weed was there every cast. After climbing that hill at the end of the comp some people looked liked they were going to lynch me. And most importantly of all - I BLANKED. Almost 4 hours of weed piling up on my line, the rod got dragged over a couple of times because of the amount of weed, all the weed that was flowing up the estuary being snagged on a stump in front of my peg, piling up and i blanked. Having to spend 10 minutes trying to get to my peg and remembering the way out and i blanked. Being stranded on my own little island of misery with a full view of other people catching fish and i blanked.
So......
Congratulations to all those who endured this session, the 5 prize winners and all those who had the decency not to try and lynch me afterwards, the next comp will be Saturday 12th July Ballycrenane 10pm - 2am, roll on the doggies, eels and whatever else may turn up.

i forgot to mention that i got sun burn.
That may have made me a bit irritable.

Or it could be that hill.
