Dalkey Rock Mark & Killiney Beach 19-08-07

Fri Jun 20, 2008 3:56 am

People: Myself and Corbyeire

Duration: 18.30 - 02.00

Tide:incoming to full

Weather: fine, calm, small swell

Bait: Rag, mack

Rigs: Dalkey: Me - float, Corbyeire - float, 1 hook ledger
Killiney: 3 hook flappers and pulleys

Results: Pollock (15), Ballan Wrasse(4), Corkwing Wrasse(1), Whiting (3), Flounder(4)

Report: Brian's first time at the mark, so gave him a quick heads up about the ground we would be fishing into.

I was fishing a float set up, and Brian had put a 1 hook ledger rig out and was also fishing a float.

I was quickly into a few fish with a pollock being the first, then a nice ballan wrasse of 39cm.

Not to be out done, Brian had a nice ballan wrasse, just a few cm's smaller than mine, then a male corkwing wrasse.

All fish being caught on the floats, however Brian had a decent sized crab on the ledger rig, and was missing the odd bite, then to our suprise had hooked into something, as it got near the surface Brian thought it was a rockling, it turned out to be a wrasse, lovely beige coloured patches on it, and caught over relatively clean ground at around 80/100 yards out

The action was fairly steady in spells, then went quite for the same length of time, then busy again, then quiet again......

I had a decent pollock (my biggest to date :D ) at around 50 yards out on the float, and a few smaller pollock.

With light fading (around 11pm) we decided to pack up and move on to Killiney beach to try for some flatties with the remaining rag.

Interestingly, both the good sized wrasse were taken around 2 yards out, just goes to show you havent got to have a 200yrd cast to catch good fish.

All in all a good session at this mark, and both of us caught the target species.

A quick drive round to killiney beach for session no.2 and we found a decent sized surf crashing onto the beach, and the tide about 2 hours from being full in, so hopes were high for some good flattie action.

Brian was first off the mark with a small flounder, it had plenty of orange spots, so we thought originally it may have been a plaice, but decided on flounder in the end.

I then had a small whiting, then Brian another flounder, then a few more fish each. Brian had all the flounder and I had all the whiting. Oh, I forgot to mention Brian's shore rockling , but I'll let him tell you about that one

Killiney was a bit quiet really, conditions seemed ideal, and we had both been a little suprised it only threw up 3 whiting and 4 flounder.

Decided to call it a night as the rag had ran out by 2am.

It was an enjoyable nights fishing all the same, and didnt mind staying out the extra few hours beyond daylight.

I hope Brian enjoyed some of these small east coast wrasse

I'm sure Brian will add anything he thinks I may have missed.

not much to add really - kept busy by the small pollack

mark had another decent enough one about the 1.5lb mark

first decent sized edible crab ive pulled out this year

great scrap off the big wrasse

thinking erics theory of the orange spots on the fins is no good (for plaice) as these boys had them but were totally diamond shaped, had the rough patch on the lateral line behind the eyes etc.

i didnt care, into a few flatties at the end of the night is always good

and for sure that was a rockling (brown and white weed on the hook with a bit of weight!!!)

i think that should have been the indication to go home as it was so late - but had to stay on and pick up another flattie!

great session and good craic!

and what about that crazy looking beige seal - sorry golden retriever

Dave, you know the mark.....now

It was a decent session, the biggest pollock gave a good scrap, and great that the venue is producing a few bigger fish aswell, this will definately become one of my more regular spots :D

A bit dissapointed that Killiney didnt offer us a few more fish :( , but couldnt complain at the night on the whole.

Dave, we are hitting Bray Head saturday evening targeting some hounds if you fancy joining us, around the same time as we headed out last saturday.

nice fishing there shamoo/corbyeire well done lads, as you said shamoo you dont need a 200yrd cast to to catch good fish, if you hit the right spot you can get them at your feet...great report and nice pic's too....

Good luck with that Dave, glad I've converted you to the ways of the wrasse, you'll certainly enjoy the scrap a 40cm+ fish gives :D

Both the bigger wrasse were caught right by our feet, and the biggest pollock around 40/50 yards out, so dont be afraid to vary your distance.

We were using the king rag I had dug the day before, just cutting them into 2/3 inch sections.

We didnt seem to miss as many bites as the night you and I had a few hours at the mark last week, so thats a good thing, but we were both fishing the floats a little shallower than I had done previously as there was a bit of a swell. I presume this meant the fish had to rise to take the bait, and hence the hook up rate was better. I used hooks from 1/0 to 3/0.
