People:Me
Duration:19.30-23.30
Tide: HW around midnight
Weather:Fine, breezy
Bait:Peeler, lug
Rigs: Pulley, Pat
Results: Ziltch
Report: Had been working in Sutton, and was planning to scout the area for bait collecting potential, so threw the gear in the car just incase.
Managed to collect a few peelers, so headed of to the mark, in search of the infamous Dollymount double figure Bass.
Arrived at LW, so it gave me chance to check the beach for features....very little, 2 small, but pronounced gulleys, both within 200 yards of HW mark.
Decided to give the tide some fill before fishing so went of to check a local mullet mark, again water level was to low, so headed back to the beach.
Got set up with a pulley rig baited with crab and banged it out as far as I could.
1/2 an hour later, no bites, so reeled in to re-load, it felt like I was reeling in a quadruple of doggies, the weight was that bad, no fish mind you just weed, on the leader knot, the swivel, the hook, and the lead.
Having read a recent post regarding dealing with problems of weed, I decided to simplify/streamline my rig, and made a quick 1 hook paternoster, without any swivels. This didnt make any difference
This was to be the pattern for the 4 hours I fished, didnt get a single bite (I dont think, but difficult to tell with the weed), what made is worse was the wind was from the right of the beach(southerly), so it was dragging the weed side ways up the beach rather than straight in towards me
Desperation to catch my first Bass kept me there much longer than common sense should have allowed
The highlight of the night by some way, was watching how many cars got stuck in the sand on the carpark
I did the good samaritan thing with a few people(dog walkers mainly), but left the boy racers to it  Lowered suspension, massive alloys and bodykits dont bode well for driving on sand....let them learn the hard way
The hunt for my 1st Bass continues, watch this space.......

Dollymount can be a nightmare for weed it seems to catch the weed from the whole bay at times, during the high tides last year I wrecked a reel with the amount of weed I was bringing in on the line. I had to actually bring the rigs in by hand after destroying the cog in the reel.

unluck on the fishing - but 100% on the effort
it must be your first blank in ages!

Hi Brian, yeh, your right, I cant remember my last blank
Opps, I did blank when I went after some macks last saturday (but that doesnt really count does it  ).
Eoinmag, I'll think twice about fishing that beach again, god only knows what it would be like with a big surf

Well I'd not rule the beach out as a place to catch some nice fish, lots to be had there under the right conditions, but it's just a mare with the weed. If you go to the statue there you can see seatrout jumping there all season, so it's not a bad spot, and the amount of peelers to be found on the remains of that old Wall would suggest to me that there have to be a lot of fish scouting the area looking for a meal.

Hi eoinmag,
Thanks for the tip for the peelers
I had a walk along that section by the statue, and it did look a decent spot.
It looked ideal for fishing off that section into a good swell, and if the wind is anywhere from the south to south easterly, it should be protected from the weed a bit more I would think.
Good shelter in the bathing huts from the wind/rain which would be a bonus
Perhaps I'll give it another try when there is a bit more surf.
Oh yeh, bad luck with the reel, atleast if you broke it on a fish, you could say the fish was so big it broke my reel

Penn repaired the reel, I just didn't tell them I hauled in about 50kg of weed with it. :)

Well done for sticking it out and trying for so long. I had a similar experience not long ago, an hour later I was in the car on my way home!!
