Report:
My mate rang me to say he was on the pier as he saw lads at lunchtime coming back with bags of mackerel. Though it was pissing rain I said why not, the rain should clear out most other people, and at the very least I can get some casting practice with my new 14 foot shimano beastmaster STC.
It was pretty windy, but the tide was coming in, and I'd never fished there before. Decided to try a bit of spinning with a Dexter to get the feel of the rod (which had a surprisingly good movement, and was beating my mate for distance with a 2oz wedge, though the rod performs best at 5oz and is rated up to 8oz).
Got the wee pollock on the second cast which was great to piss my mate off as he had been there an hour! The two Chinese lads there couldnt believe I threw it back, but it was their first time, so I explained the difference between pollock and mackerel to them.
Put out some bait, and had a nibble on the lug but no bite. Maybe a doggie.
I have to say though, the rubbish was a fecking disgrace. Birds nests, carboard backing, half filleted mackerel, flounder and codling laying about to stink. Cans bottles etc.. My mate said he saw some polish lads throwing beer cans into the sea - unbelievable!
Anyway, nothing else doing, and no mackerel but my first hit out with the new rod. I think the wind was easterly which was odd, and it turned cold. Any tips on the pier - is it any use?
