Report:
arrived at the 3 hours before hw with hope that a few thornies would show. for the first hour things were kinda quiet with a solitary dogfish and a massive starfish of about 12 i8nches across taking an interest to my bait, had one ray like bite which amounted to nothing. at this stage i dropped a mack head and guts into the rough ground about 30 yds out and withing 10 mins had a good bite, i left this for a few mins but when i struck every thing had locked up solid..another bait was launched out and almost instantly was taken, this time i struck withing 20 seconds and after a short spirited fight had a nice conger just below 12lbs, this was followd by 2 more around the 7lb mark, i lost 2 more in mid water, one which felt a good double, and 2 more in the bottom when i couldnt shift them. i also had a 2 lb strap on the distance rod, burt alas no ray.
next plan was to fish a mark i had been looking at for a while over low water, hoping that it would hold ray.i got some food and made the mark 3 hours before lw. on arriving it became apparent that the channel was about 130yds out and ther was a bank of weed for 50-60 yds out ehich could make things interesting if i did hook anything. first cast was quite for about 20 mins with my mind wandering to the thought of heading off when i got a typical ray bite, slow short nods, then the rod hooped over, almost pulling it off the stand. i struck and everything went crazy, the rod doubled and about 10 ydws of line came off the reel, then it went slack, i wont repeat what i said....
with added vigour i recast and then set up the second rod.10 mins later i had a repeat bite which i gave a little longer and struck into a solid weight, again half way in it came off, this time getting stuck in the weed. again i rebaited and sent it out. as i placed the rod in the rest the the started nodding. i gave this one about a min and struck, this time i got his head up, which resulted in a my first thrornie of the year of 9.4lbs.next cast i had a slightly smaller one of 8.5lbs..i lost 2 more in the weed, although i'm pretty sure it was from striking to early.also had a couple of lighter bites which amounted to nothing. about 2 hours after lw the bites stopped and with darkness approaching i decided to call it a day....
