A continuation from this post

People:myself, saltydog, nigel(non sai member) with special appearences from Pat Spillane and Teacher

Duration:76 hours

Tide:all over the place

Weather:mostly clear with some rain

Bait:crab, rag, lug, sandeel, mackerel, squid

Rigs:various

Results:dogfish, huss, plaice, flounder, smoothies (common and starry), thornback ray, whiting, bass, dab,

Report: Contd...

Session 3:wednesday, Cahore pier.
Having heard reports of huss being caught here we thought it whould be worth a shot, unable to fish from the end of the pier (other anglers were there) we were forced to start fron halfway along and fish over the back of the pier, doggies were coming in straight away and a steady flow of doggies at that, much to the bemusement of the 'other anglers' we returned every thing we caught. As it started to get late the 'other anglers' slowly left leaving us the chance to move to the end of the pier, at this time we were also joined by Pat Spillane. having moved over to let him in (big mistake) doggies were still making an appearence then pat got a nice rattle on the rod.... a plaice... a big plaice... easily over 40cm. plenty of slagging and banter continued as the fish were coming in, a change of technique saw me pull in a few dabs :D this was time to get the species in, a few doubles for nigel dogs and dab were on tnhe menu there, then to much merryment saltydog pulled in a huss not long after pat left us all alone on the pier.. dogs and dabs were still coming in frequently, as the sun was making its way to appear on the horizon another change of tactics produced a few flounder and a whiting for me..
total catch for session 3:
me: 4 dabs, 1 whiting, 1 flounder, 16 doggies
saltydog: 17 doggies, 1 huss, 1 dab
nigel:3 dab, 15 doggies

Session 4: Thursday, tinnaberna & courtown pier.

arrived down to tinnaberna with a surf in the water and a strong wind at sea, the fishing proved difficult as weed took over the lines, however after a few hours fishing i got a flounder, nigel got a whiting and saltydog pulled out a doggie, we broke camp around 1:30am and headed off for Courtown pier.
slightly more sheltered and a lot less weed the fishing wasnt as harsh as earlier, and the doggies were playing ball too,

me:22 dogfish, 5 dabs, 1 flounder
saltydog:18 doggies, 3 dab 1 flounder
nigel:1 whiting, 1 starry smoothound, 2 dabs, 14 doggies

Session 5: Friday, knocknasilloge
we met up with teacher and were brought down loads of country roads before reaching the mark  ,
conditions looked favourable and crab baits were chucked to the horizon, teacher was the first to catch with what looked like a couple of dab, yet again another night of catching fish.. sleep deprivation was starting to kick in, we were joined by 3 young drunk people that went a bit further down the beach and i'm quite sure they went skinny dipping,

me:1 huss, 1 flounder, 6 doggies, 1 starry smoothound
saltydog: 6 doggies 1 huss
nigel: 1 bass, 1 whiting, 3 doggies

Session 6:saturday, Rosslare & Courtown pier.
after a quick bite to eat (BBQ at teacher's house) we were off to rosslare to fish the point, but due to a few people there taking over the whole area  we were forced to fish off the groyne,
the fishing was rather slow but we were entertained by sea trout and bass that were swiming within feet of us and jumping all around us. then the run started, teacher was the firast to get a runn with a smal smoothie, and i was soon to follow, then i got a doggie sized common smoothie and soon after teacher got a nice starry about 3lbs.. then all went dead nothing for ages so it wasnt long before we broke camp and headed into wexford for food, its quite surreal being in tesco's at 3am with all the drunken crowds, it wasnt long before we were on the road again.. with saltydog and nigel with no fish it was time to hit courtown pier, where i picked up a nice littel plaice, which i returned with out getting any photo of  , saltydog produced a double shot of doggies and there were mullet swimming around but wer'nt taking any of the baits presented to them..
me:1 starry smoothound, 1 common smoothound, 1 plaice, 2 doggies
saltydog:4 doggies
nigel: 3 doggies 1 dab

Session 7: Sunday, 2 north wexford beaches.
we did an afternoon session for a couple of hours which only produced one small flounder for me, nothing eventful there, headed for food and then later that night we hit a second beach further up the cost, where i got 4 doggies and saltydog finally beat me ( i was dying with fatigue and sleep deprivation, and the pizza didnt agree with me  ) salty dog managed to get a nice little thornie and 8 doggies..

me: 4 doggies 1 flounder
saltydog: 8 doggies 1 thornie

over all totals

me:70 doggies, 1 plaice, 8 flounder, 10 dab, 4 starry smoothound, 1 common smoothound, 1 whiting, 1 huss (96 fish)
saltydog:66 doggies, 2 flounder, 2 huss, 1 starry smoothound, 4 dab, 1 thornie. (76 fish)
nigel: 42 doggies, 1 bass, 6 dab 1 starry smoothound 2 whiting (52 fish)

total fish count: 224 fish

Will add some photos later!!

Mon Jun 09, 2008 9:20 pm

Good couple of sessions with the lads. Seems quieter around here now :D

Afraid I couldn't keep up with the pace over the weekend. But then I think I outfished them on both occasions so maybe I'm better suited to short distances .. :P

Don't know about the others but I was feeling the pain of 6 hours jumping around the end of the groyne on Saturday night.

mga wrote:By the way, is there a "Session 8" to follow

more than likely

things that didnt get mentioned above....

6 bottles of whisky were consumed,
dinner usually happened between 6am and 10am,
ragworm bites can be felt for a few days (so saltydog says)
it is possible to get across the country in about 3hrs
saltydog is a new tackle tart (floatie, headlight, zzippy, etc etc)

and i'll also use this part to say thanks to the lads in
'courtown harbour sea angling centre' for outstanding service
and excellent bait, and cups of tea.

Well a great weeks fishing in Wexford was had by all the craic was top drawer we were sore from laughing and last nights session we could barely stand Steve was phsyically sick he says it was the pizza but i reckon it was all the energy drinks and me outfishing him on the night  . It was my first trip across since march and was itching to try a mark that had produced smuts and pup tope for me previously it didn't let us down and produced the first smuts of the trip will be back a bit later to try for the tope (Steve your welcome to come but you'll have to organise someone to cook the food open the gate pour the bushmills and get the duck eggs!!) We basically fished ate and slept the longest duration of sleep for the trip was about 5hrs. My body clock is all over the place every muscle aches (thank God for Shiatzu back masage chairs :D )

It was nice to put a couple more faces to names Pat Spillane and Teacher nice to meet you both :) Pat well done on the Plaice and Teacher well done on that smoothie both crackers!!

Will echo what Steve said about the lads in Courtown Harbour Sea Angling Centre very helpful and well stocked shop (at least when we got there!!  )

P.S. i've another week to take shortly either end of June or 1st / 2nd week in July and if things work out i might have the whole month of August off so Steve clear your calendar (and join a gym   ) there's a lot more marks we didn't try yet :D :D

ah, you only out fished me on the night because i was too busy trying to remove that pizza from my system, and the fact that the longest sleep i had was about 3 hrs..

we also forgot to mention the longest session we fished was 13hours at Cahore pier, from 4:30pm - 5:30am  (dinner at 8am)

I would also like to take this opportunity on behalf of myself and Steve to apologise to the T@sco staff in Wexford and Gorey for arriving in at very odd hours and having other customers ask if the fish counter was open :) and also for all the assistance required items at the self service counter

Steve you forgot to mention i set you up in all the best spots trying to be a good host as it was your first time fishing over my side with me but next time round its everyman for himself!!

P.S. i'm wide awake and sitting beside a sink full of water wondering what time the fish will appear!! I really need to get to bed  have to be up at 06:10

Oh yeah gimme a shout if your on for Wed i haven't been fishing in ages!!
