B.A.S.S Club 3rd Comp 2008 - East Cork Venue

People: 11 I think

Duration: 4-8pm

Tide: low tide ~5pm

Weather: Wet and miserable

Bait: crab, lug etc...

Rigs: I assume mainly 3 hook flappers

Results: 2 Bass, 6 flounder (I think)

I should get a job in sea angler, they can make a 2lb coddling look like a 6lb cod.

Fished that comp, the first B.A.S.S. comp I've made it to since joining. The news on arriving wasn't good as another club had fished the drop and only had 3 fish between everyone to show. Pegged up towards the top end on 14 well away from any of the few fish that did make an appearance, aside from an odd sea trout flipping around and armies of crabs on the march it was devoid of any form of life or excitement up our way. Still, things could have been worse, thank god for the relative comfort of the beach buddy in the constant rain and a 30 metre walk from car to peg. Hoping the next foray produces a bit better, congrats to those who managed to pull fish out in slack conditions.

There were a total of 12 fishing and the last 5 pegs had nothing (including me). 2 bass and 6 flounder were caught and the 2 bass were caught on the first 2 pegs. The bass was 6.5lb ( we weighed it ) and it tasted lovely the next day!. 70cm long but not the broadest/widest bass you'll ever see. The other bass was 41cm and it was put back.
Normally at this time of year you would expect flounder to be all over this particular venue, but they were scarce - scarcer for the guys fishing before us':wink:'.
There was also A LOT of weed hanging around close to the shore line and as the tide picked up it started to cause problems.
The other thing i noticed was the amount of bags around the shore and in the water as well.
To top all this off an hour into the competition i noticed that my top eye was damaged and was grating my line as i was reeling in - for the last 45mins i was using the 2 nd last eye.
Next month - slob bank - you would have to be very unlucky to blank there in may, and with the size for specimen flounder now at around 2.5lb there may be 1 or 2 specimens caught.

I must get a new top eye tho!

Tom, has the spiecmen size been reduced? down to 2.5 from 3lb.?

According to http://www.irish-trophy-fish.com/trophies/marine.htm the specimen size is now 1.1kg or 2.4255 lb.

I really hope its accurate.

The Bass above was 70cm and at 6.5lb about 1lb below average for that length. I read some scales and it was 8 years old, the space between the last 3 lines was very narrow, which means that this Bass had some lean years recently. Anyway still a nice fish and yes hope the fishing is better at the slob, although I am not complaining :D
