A pier, Co. Limerick, 23-April-2008

Thu Apr 24, 2008 4:46 pm

People: Me

Duration: 6:30pm till 10:10pm

Tide:14:37 (1.1m) 20:23 (4.7m)

Weather: Strong southerly, cloudy

Bait: Mackerel, wrap and sand eel

Rigs: Up and overs 3/0s and 1/0 2 hook golds at distance. 3 hook flappers with size 4 match hooks close in.

Results: At least 30 whiting caught to 24cm, two small dabs to the scratching rigs and a doggy at distance

Report: Arrived up and first cast had treble of whites followed by two more trebles to mack. Anything half way baited up correctly was getting a treble. I wasn't going for speed as between unhooking and releasing there were a few belly up. As high tide approached and the tide started to run, things quietened to the odd fish though there was some trebles to black tipped with mack but after 9pm it went dead. I had hoped for dabs which I enjoy fishing as they have cracking bites and recover better but the Estuary seems to be teeming with whites. Good to try out scratching with my AA surf and the mangler I bought last year and never use.

I fished sand eel on my distance rod and was picking up whiting on this. Around 9.30pm as drakness crept in I had a thundering bite with the bait going down stream. Lifting into it I felt weed going down the line all the way through with the rod bent over pulling it through the tide flow. Lifting the up and over rig up it was filled with weed and I left it down and fired a new rig out. After cleaning up my scratching rigs as they were no longer producing I went to the up and over rig to find a doggy on hanging off the pier. It started to lash at 9.50 pm and I ran inside to the car. There was no end to it so I cleared up my gear. The rig had gone to the left and there was a very heavy weight that bent the primo down to the butt. This eventually snagged up when I removed a rubber thumb got caught up in the reel due to a slight nest that I hadn't removed as it was my last cast. I did feel some weed down the line so it may just of been a a plastic bag or something that got caught up due to leaving line out to hold to the floor with the tide run.
