People: Me

Duration: 7.30 - 9.45 pm

Tide: HW at 8.00 pm

Weather: Moderate southwesterly wind, dry at first, heavy rain later

Bait: Lug worm, razor, peeler crab

Rigs: 4/0 and 3/0 pennel pulley and flapper rigs

Results: 1 bass

Report: As the wind had finally changed to a southwesterly I thought I would head out to the beach where I recently caught two bass. I had intended to get out a bit earlier but by the time I had the first rod set up it was 7.30 pm. I was not expecting much of a surf as there has only been a light breeze in town in the afternoon but when I got to the beach there was quite a strong breeze and a very good surf.

After casting out the first rod I was setting up the second and noticed the first rod was bounding around a bit - hardly a fish already, must just be the wave action I thought but then realized there was definitely a fish on the line. Retrieved it and there was a bass - on the first cast

It was 43 cm and 2lb exactly, caught with the 4/0 pennel pulley with lugworm/razor.

Thinking that this looked very promising - I cast out again but had a bad mis-cast - only went out about 25 m. But I left it there to finish setting up the second rod. After I had cast out the second, there was a strong pull on the first. I started to retrieve - definitely a fish, and it felt heavier than the first and was putting up more of a fight so I was sure it was bigger bass. I almost has it landed, then disaster  I lost it in the last wave that crashed onto the shore

Fishing got difficult after that due to weed - spent a lot of time struggling with 2-3 lb balls of seaweed.

The line snapped on one of the rods - it was probably damaged by being battered against stones on the shore as the seaweed was dragging the line down into the surf. Shortly after that I managed to snag the lost line with the other rod and ended up with an horrendous mess of tangled line and seaweed. I made an attempt to untangle it, then the heavy rain started, I empaled my finger on a hook somewhere in the middle of it all. As the tide was now dropping I decided that was enough and packed up.

But a good enough result - 1 bass on the first cast.

Nice one rockhunter. Never reel in a miscast!! I got a gilthead bream on a miscast last year, those fish come in much closer than we seem to think :)

Well done. Days like that remain in the memory, a bit of hardship makes it more worthwhile. Have to agree with the Scotsman, never reel in a mis cast, my daughter got an 8 lb huss less than 10 feet out on a flat beach.
Always good to have a bait in close. Remember sharks attack in 2 feet of water.

Thanks Dave,
It was great to get the bass on the first cast - I didn't have to worry about blanking after that. Even impaling my finger on a hook seemed a minor inconvienence - although it still hurt
