Greystones South Beach 19/04/08

Sat Apr 19, 2008 11:29 am

People: Just me

Duration: 20.30-22.30
Tide: Rising, High at 23.38

Weather:38 mph wind gusting to 50mph, 8-10' swell (rising), suprisingly not as cold as I thought it would be (maybe that was the extra layers I put on)

Bait: Mack, Lug, Rag

Rigs: 1 Hook Paternoster, 3 Hook Flapper (in the suds)

Results: 1 Small Dab

Report: I should have been heading to Belmullet, Mayo for a weekend of West Coast fishing but my fishing buddys plans had changed so after just one short session earlier in the week, I was heading out last night whatever the weather. Big surf rolling in and thought that might have brought a few fish in....I was wrong

The very strong easterly made both casting and fishing almost impossible, using an 8oz lead I could only cast maybe 60 yrds, but it was holding bottom and I thought that would have given me a chance.

Bite detection was impossible as the rods were bouncing around like a trampolinist in the rod rest. The big surf/swell was bending the rods round like I had hooked into a Tope

Caught the small dab on lug/mack on the paternoster, only had the 3 hook flapper out for 2 casts, the surf tangled the rig to a birds nest and I soon put the rod away.

Great to see the surf rolling in, some spectacular waves, one or two caught me out and evidently waders would have been better than the wellies I was wearing, I soon had wet feet  .

Decided to call it a day after 2 hours, got some fish and chips and parked above the rocks to the north end of the beach. Great to see the waves crashing into the rocks and splashing right across the road.

Lovely beach though and cant wait to hit the spot in better weather.

Anybody else head out last night :?: :?: :?: :?:

Yes Shamoo, bypassed Wicklow and headed on down to Balinoulart, just beside Mauricecastle in Wexford yesterday at 5pm and fished a rising tide until 8pm. Weather was foul with spitting rain and gale force north easterly wind. Good surf and had high hopes of a bass or two but it wasn't to be. Had full chest waders and fished one rod close in (40mtrs) and the other at about 70/80mtrs but not a tap on either. Will try again tomorrow when the winds are due to ease slightly as I had a lot of bait left over.

Same here, plenty of bait left so gonna hit a surf beach in South Wicklow tomorrow evening, was there 4/5 weeks ago, not too much surf then but one of the lads had a bass of around 2-2 1/2 lb. Mind you it was the oly fish caught on the beach between 5 of us in 3/4 hours :( :( :(

Good luck tomorrow

there will be a serious amount of debris on the beaches after these east winds no harm in going down when it settles to have a look. you'll always find a handful of weights and the likes

good man on the dab

regards

Thanks lads, yeh it was a pretty rough night alright, great to save the blank though :) but was hoping for a bit more :(

   A handy tip that brianbru, I'll try and get out during the week for a scavange hunt

Eric, when I had finished in Greystones, I had a drive upto Killiney to see if it was fishable.....Not a hope, like you say huge, huge waves....If I'd have tried to throw a line in I would have needed to do it from the train station I reckon, otherwise I'd have soon been swept out to sea

Best of luck everyone for tomorrow...oops its actually today now, forgot it was this late :o must get some sleep, I'll need all my energy for those South Wicklow Bass later 8) 8) 8)

Thanks Rodger

If you check out the results of my poll so far, I think the majority tend to agree with you.....ah well it was great craic.

I had a session at Howth harbour last night (friday obviously taught me nothing  ), in fairness with the easterlies blowing I thought that the strand behind Sutton Golf Club might have afforded me some protection from the elements(and some nice flatties) but by the time I had got there last night the wind had changed to a NE direction so that was out of the question.

Not put off, I had a drive upto Howth Harbour and after a quick stroll up both piers I found a spot out of the wind behind the small boating club on the east pier by the main light house. Barely a breeze there which was great. Fished 20.30 to 00.30 and had 5 whiting, the biggest around 25cm :), so not a great session alround but better than watching the idiots lantern back home (thats what my father calls the TV  )

Just nice to be out (again) to TBH, but HW was around 23.30 and it made for a pretty terrifying walk back to the car with huge waves breaking over the pier/breakwater, so bad in fact that I contemplated heading back to my fishing mark and waiting for lower water, I did in fact continue though and perhaps this adds credence to my poll..... Brave (maybe :D ) or stupid, the readers will decide

Bring on the Bass this evening :D :D :D

myself hush and another lad went fishing and managed a few bars of silver ,its nice to know there are other nutters out in that weather

Sun Apr 20, 2008 3:54 pm

ah your not that mad... come over to the west when there is a force 8-9 westerly. i'll take you out fishin a couple of spots

p.s. expect to have waves crash over a pier wall that you'd be fishing under

Sun Apr 20, 2008 4:05 pm

That would only be a breeze on the west coast come across between Sept and Dec and you will see some real rough weather
