Nice ray Donagh,
I been meaning to ask you about any place either side of the estuary that a work mate of mine might chance a few dogfish,

I know a lot of people think theyre pests but this guy cant wait to fish for them,
He is just getting into the sea fishing game so I said I would help him with a few spots to try,

Cheers.

Donagh,
Just remembered your report on the 6th about LSD in Carrigaholt,

I will send him on there unless you can suggest a spot closer to him he will be travelling from Nenagh, 8)

I wouldn't recommend carrigaholt as the best fishing was at big distance. Poulnasharry has a report of dogs up on here. Carrig east has a reputation for dogs but I haven't fished there much. It's probably early to get them in big numbers and the further out in the Estuary usually has more dogs.

Most I've had in the estuary is around 20 dogs and you'd usually get some ray or huss in with that where as on the east coast I've had 50 to 60 in a four hour session with no chance of an another species. I've heard the open coast in clare and kerry will fish like that on calm nights in the summer at night but I've never been to pushed to find out

nice one donagh. Good to see the zippy christened fella. can't wait for the rays to show up here. what size of hooks u using on ur rigs

Tue Apr 15, 2008 12:10 pm

For hook size see the rigs section but there varivas big mouths so a 2/0 gape is comparitive to a 3/0. Hook size is chosen to reflect bait size. Plenty of crab action means big baits.

Would you say a calm night is better for the dogs, then?

I don't fish the open coast much but thats the general opinion and what I've experienced. One mark I can think of fishes best for doggies with strong westerly at low water when the waves are belting the shoreline but thats sheltered and it's more to do with the wind making the tide run harder.

Thanks for the info,
as he is only starting this type of fishing i dont think his gear would be the best for distance,
couldnt find the poulnasharry report so went and printed a map and info on New Quay just outside Kildysart,
got it off the srfb site it sounds like a good place for him to start,

you may have fished this venue so any info you might have will be passed on to him,

i would hate to see him blank his first day out,

Cheers,

Kildysart is deep water and very strong tides not a place to head on springs. I don`t knw the place that well after that
