a wicklow strand

People:keith, the dodger and myself

Duration:cant remember

Tide:full in around 11 or so

Weather:mild and calm

Bait:rag,lug,sandeel,squid,razor and mack

Rigs:pulleys and flappers

Results:flounder,dabs,dogs,starry smoothy,spotted ray and whiting

Report:3rd session of the day and just one of those nights, came with the intention of bass and left with a skip full of doggies and a few surprises. arrived at the beach and was greeted by a flat sea and warm weather, first time my hands didn't seize up in ages for the first hour not a fish came to the fore, but soon keith struck with a doggie at around 70 yards out, i missed a savage bite, probably a good flounder, but soon redeemed myself with a double dab and fluke, my distance rod soon began to signal the arrival of the wow wows, i managed three of em in successive casts, with only a few flats on the bass rod for a little variation. i noticed a small tap on the distance rod and decided to leave it, soon enough after no more bites developed i began to reel in, i broke out the lead and still a hefty weight remained, something told me ive hooked the all weed in in wicklow on this trace, got it too about 10 yards off the shore and then i noticed my line was heading off to the left, a second later i glimpsed the glowing eyes of a doggie, surely not, beached the fish only to see a spotted ray flapping about on the beach, must say i was chuffed, a new pb for the species too. back to doggie bashing it was, the beach began to look like a scene from saving private ryan with glowing eyes of washed up dogs all over the shop, must have returned about 10 of em who didnt make a success of it the first time round. with no more ray showing up, thought i hooked into another one, this time it felt heavier, turnt out to be double dog, on a single hook pulley, with neither hooking themselves, just got tangled in the line , about 1 hour from pack up time, keith managed a starry smoothy weighing in around a lb. for the beginning of april i was surprised at the fish caught, the lads have the pics im sure theyl post em up later

Once again great fishing, noticed in your report you had a Dab and a fluke, over here they call Dabs fluke's, is there a difference...??

Are there enough smoothies to target them later on ,or are you riding your luck if you make contact?

Sat Apr 05, 2008 6:06 pm

my granddand used to call flounders flukes, so thats what i call em,

theres plenty of smoothies here from late may onwards, pick a good tide at dusk with some fresh peeler on a mark which is known for em and you should see a few.

Well done - great to get that many species in one session.
Fishing down south is still poor - and its not just me - any anglers far more experienced than me that I have spoken to are finding it the same. Lets hope it improves soon.
