People:Me
Duration: 6:20pm until 10:20pm
Tide: 16:41 (4.1m) 22:18 (1.4m)
Weather: Mild, cloudy clearing later. Westerly breeze that died out
Bait: Rotten mackerel, refrozen sand eel and squid
Rigs: Pulleys. Mainly 2/0 penels.
Results: 1lb ray, 22cm, whiting and a poor cod.
Report:Bait supply at the moment is pretty poor with my freezer used up with only the refrozen fish baits lefts. Unfortunately the best quality bait I can get at the moment in Limerick is fishfinder mackere and I won't buy it.
I started at a peg I call the west wall where good ray can be caught even at the top of the tide. The post high tide run going up the river started as I started fishing there was a levely westerly breeze and conditions were perfect but not a tap. I was casting my new syncro further out as distance can be of benefit when fishing is slow here and cleaner ground here means this will not result in tackle losses.
After 9pm I moved over to the gulley for Low water and snaggier ground. I hit the syncro at further out to the left of the gulley but it hit the reef and snagged up when retriving. It really isn't up to the job for the rougher mixed ground. After huffing a puffing at it I pulled for the break and changed reels for heavier line. I noticed my other rod had slightly slackened and I pulled in a 1lb ray from 50 yards out from the center of the gulley. Next couple of casts gave the smaller fish that had been mangled onto the 2/0 hooks. Happy out with getting a ray even if it was small as it is still early in the season.
