Mackerel Reports for '08 here.....

Here's the kick-off that seemed to work last year pointing to to the location of our humble but hard fighting macks around the country, all the points are still valid

"I think it would be a great resource for many SAI supporters to report the presence (or absence) of macks from shore all throughout the season in as close to real time as possible.
Not looking for any secrets here, just the type of info that someone driving by the bridge in Kinsale will know if s(he) sees mackerel being caught. This website gives a chance to have info feeding in from all over the country to one spot for the entire season.

Why?..
A better idea of where and when the macks are about might:
1. Increase chances of catching nice dinner
2. Tempt you to try fishing for them with a fly rod or very light gear
3. Allow you to bring nippers along, they'll NEVER forget catching the first mack
4. If it works it might mean less time fishing for bait (if the bait is mack)
5. it might mean less need to haul in loads at a time for bait for the freezer during the season
6. Use the info to avoid mack bashers (I have found the morning tide can be like a different planet, a quiet, safe one
above are the 'selfish' reasons, other reasons are:
7. If supported it could provide an annual 'database' on mack stocks, allowing rough comparison from year to year
8. Might cut down on the need to take extra macks in a session, which is good for the fish.

(BTW reporting the presence or not of mack bashers might be a good idea during the high season, also reporting no macks would be just as important as reporting a catch)

i've sticky'd this so it doesnt get lost in all the reports...

also have it on good authority that a few mack have been caught (from boat) off the north shore of Galway bay, so they are close :D :D

Great idea men, I think the lads had a few down South from the boat last week too!

had an hr 2 spare yesterday, so i decided 2 try a local mark 4 macks, none shown up at moment, but it wont be much longer as they were der around dis time las yr.

good idea u started and look 4ward 2 reporting and reading reports :D :D

Great Idae lads, I will certainly post any relevant info I get im going to be doing a good bit of bait collecting this yr! I found a good way to avoid the Makeral bashers(fair weather fishermen) is to get out early or in between 9-12. I will throw up reorts on here and some pics

Theres a sign on Bearna Pier saying thta macks were caught there last week. Can't vouch for it, but thats what it says.

Tried Dunmore East yesterday with feathers while I fished with bait with my second rod. Nothing so far over here in the sunny south east.

There is one Mackerel pic in there Steve and there is no way it was caught. Has the look of a recently defrosted joey mack, slight yellew tint etc. Its no way near the colour of a freshly caught mack.

:) tried tramore rocks myself this morning, not a sign of them close in yet :? , hopefully another week or 2 they show up. remembered got them in early april last. lol

I'll be very interested to see where and when the first shore caught mack appears (I'm not surprised that boats are landing some)

It would be interesting to see if they suddenly appear in a few different places or if they turn up first in one part of the country...........

An invasion.......you would assume that with in two weeks of them showing up in one place they would be wide spread, I had a dozen on teh fly in co.down last year on teh 5th April whilst fishing sea trout, my earliest to date.

hey guys iv heard of reports of mackeral being caught at the mouth of the belfast lough and also a few being caught on the carrick harbour. :D

report in the irish angling update, the email you gets off a the centrel fishies board by sum fien called myles kelly, mostly bol i x but anyway it says reports of macks off a dunlaoighry in dublin-prob bs
