Very late report this, but i suppose at this time of the year anything that fires up the enthusiasm is good.
Myself, Boycie & Love to Fish (Paul aka “The Cock”), headed down to Dingle for a week of fishing, boozing & merriment last October, the fishing wasn’t always spectacular but it was a brilliant week spent in Eugene & Marie Lynes brilliant cottages in Brandon. We tried to fish at least 2 sessions every day, some day’s 3, tough going at time.
The morning sessions were mainly spining around headlands and bays, afternoons on the rocks floatfishing for some quality wrasse and the night sessions were off the surf beaches, or the Harbour itself for Rays & Conger. We had some lovely seatrout spinning but drew a blank for the bass all week (I asked Eugene had anyone ever stayed with them for a week and not a caught a bass, his reply “I’ll be honest with ye, NO”), Boycie missed a craker one afternoon and I lost one out plugging with the cock early one morning.
Only remember a couple of sessions well, The first night session was fishing into a massive surf on Trabeg, bound to be a few bass in it we thought, my first time using my new Grauvell rod and an hour in it hooped over in the stand and I was connected to a mighty fish, a cracking scrap which I was sure was a decent bass saw me land a 9lb Painted Ray, I had a puss on me though because i thought it was a good bass. Half an hour later boycie hooked into a 7lb Painted, possibly my lads girlfriend??
Next Night we had 7 or 8 congers off the harbour, Boycie put us right and we had a few each, nothing huge but I had my first ever, just over 10lb, result.
Next Day I had a couple of seatrout on Kiltys in the estuary , and the cock did everything he could to loose the seatrout that impaled itself on his spinner, he couldn’t loose it no matter how hard he tried!!! Shortly after boycie pulled out of a good bass close in.
Next night we fished fermoyle in calm conditions, despite this we had plenty of fish between us, flounders, whiting, dabs, dogs & pouting, sandeel was the top bait, it was then it was decided to fish The SAI Master Angler comp on the Saturday evening, pity the fishing wasn’t as good!!! Anyway the comp went well for us housemates with me winning, boycie third and the cock fourth. Dingle is possibly my favourite part of the world, it’s fantastic!!!!
