People:Myself & A Seal
Duration:6 Hours
Tide:Flood
Weather:Some wibd, Some rain & a bit of sun early on
Bait:Rag, Squid
Rigs:1 Up 1 Down, 2 Hook Pat
Results: 4 Turbot (All Small) And a pile of tiny whiting
Report: Nice sunny day to begin, A turbot here and there, they seem to be getting very plentiful but still very small, Then they slowed up as the rain and wind got harder, The whiting went at it, Nearly every cast I was getting two at a time! Pity they werent of any size. Not a bad day, There was a large shark like fin prowling for about an hour, It definitely wasnt rubbish because it was moving against the tide, I dont want to sound nuts, But it looked way to big for a porpoise and had a huge shadow in the sea when I stood on the wall for a look, My phone was empty as I had taken a few turbot shots and the battery was already low, People have seen Basking Sharks around here before, But maybe it wasnt, Whatever it was big anyway!!

Doubt very much if it was a basking shark. Basking shark are reported to hibernate during winter. If it was a basking shark then global warming is really beginning to tell.
Quote from Fishbase
The discovery of basking sharks lacking functional gill rakers during autumn and winter in north-west European waters suggests a resting, non-feeding, demersal stage (Ref. 5967). It is suggested that hibernation in winter is possible because of the energy reserves in the large, oil-rich liver, which is lighter in spring than at the end of summer (Ref. 32805).

A Basking Shark shows two fins when close to the surface. 1, the dorsal fin and 2, the tip of the tail which can sometimes be confusing as it sweeps through 180 degrees giving the impression of second fish being present.

a few years ago when a lot of half deckers were fishing out from leenan pier, we were fishing from the rocks and we were watching a half decker drifting its nets at the mouth of the bay, the boat then came back in to the pier and we were talking to them at the small car park at the top of the pier. they said they had to come back in for a basking shark had riped the s*** out of their nets, he said that it was the second time in a week that this had happened....
