Results: 4 Turbot (All Small) And a pile of tiny whiting




Report: Nice sunny day to begin, A turbot here and there, they seem to be getting very plentiful but still very small, Then they slowed up as the rain and wind got harder, The whiting went at it, Nearly every cast I was getting two at a time! Pity they werent of any size. Not a bad day, There was a large shark like fin prowling for about an hour, It definitely wasnt rubbish because it was moving against the tide, I dont want to sound nuts, But it looked way to big for a porpoise and had a huge shadow in the sea when I stood on the wall for a look, My phone was empty as I had taken a few turbot shots and the battery was already low, People have seen Basking Sharks around here before, But maybe it wasnt, Whatever it was big anyway!!

nice turbot mate. id say it was a basking shark alright i have seen them really close in down at dunmore east!!!

possibly a basking shark alright.. chances are the winds have been blowing plankton closer to the shore and they are following the masses of it in :idea:

nice one turbot' sorry i did not make it. sent you a pm yerterday. had a wee job to finish off. would say brainru n' stevecrow are right (Basking shark) i have seen a lot of them in the bay over the years, and always in the rough weather. well done on the turbot mate...

yip!! last vist here was on 1st march had a good turbot and missed a conger.DL Turbot puts in a lot of hours on this pier in all weather, fair play to him. Mickey from leenan will be looking for rent money off him :lol: :lol: :lol: :lol: keep it lit turbot :lol: :lol:

Doubt very much if it was a basking shark. Basking shark are reported to hibernate during winter. If it was a basking shark then global warming is really beginning to tell.

The ground is clean enough, Mackerel works ok!!

A Basking Shark shows two fins when close to the surface. 1, the dorsal fin and 2, the tip of the tail which can sometimes be confusing as it sweeps through 180 degrees giving the impression of second fish being present.

a few years ago when a lot of half deckers were fishing out from leenan pier, we were fishing from the rocks and we were watching a half decker drifting its nets at the mouth of the bay, the boat then came back in to the pier and we were talking to them at the small car park at the top of the pier. they said they had to come back in for a basking shark had riped the s*** out of their nets, he said that it was the second time in a week that this had happened....
