People: Me
Duration: 4.00 - 7.45 pm
Tide: HW at 7.00 pm
Weather: Calm, dry, light S/SW breeze
Bait: crab, mussel, squid, lugworm, oyster
Rigs: Single hook flapper 3/0, two hook flapper size 2 hook
Results: 2 coalfish, 4 whiting
Report: Fished the pier wall behind carpet factory. I had some peeler crab left over from a couple of weeks ago but it had gone a bit rancid before I froze it - I tried it in combination with mussel but the quality of the crab was seriously degraded and it did not attract any bites. The first whiting was caught approaching dusk on size 2 hook with mussel and squid. It was very small but useful has a bait fish for another day.
The first coalfish was caught on lugworm. It was 34 cm and almost exactly 1 lb The whiting bacame more active after dark, two were caught on oyster. The two hook flapper was baited with oyster on the upper hook and mussel+squid on the lower hook but the oyster got the fish.
The second coalfish took oyster on the single hook 3/0 flapper. It was almost identical in size to the first.
The last whiting was caught on the 3/0 flapper with lugworm. This was the largest whiting at about 25 cm.
This was the first time I had used oyster as a bait and it seemed to be the most effective. Unfortunately the crabs also liked it - I hauled in at least four crabs that refused to let go of the oyster.
The following day I tried fishing just up stream from Youghal Bridge with oyster - and the crabs really loved it - got three on one cast  one clutching to a crab/squid bait on the lower hook, two devouring the oyster bait on the upper hook, another cast produced two crabs clinging onto the oyster on the single hook flapper
