76cm dogfish, 35cm coalfish, 26cm 3 bearded rockling, 21cm pouting and a mystery fish


Report:well hello everyone :D ,this is our first post from our usual mark, dee harbour. it's been a bit quiet here lately. I fished here during the day last week and came up blank, but as usual we returned after dark and produced the goods :lol: . we also pulled up a mystery fish in the bait trap which i can't identify in any of our books, so comments would be greatly appreciated. we arrived and set up for half nine and cast our rods out to the gap between the mouth of the harbour and the far harbour wall. i was into a nice 26cm 3 bearded rockling almost immeadetaly, which was a suprise considering we were using 3/0 hooks :shock: things went quiet for a while and then my son caught his biggest fish to date, a 76cm dogfish :D around 11pm. we likely missed lots of bites after this because the wind picked up and you could not tell when we were getting bites or it was the wind bending the rod tips. but we stuck with it anyway and around midnight jordan was into a nice 35cm coalfish but the wind was really becoming a pain. then it felt like an episode of deadliest catch. we must have fed every crab in the harbour with our baits. we were going to wrap it up at 2am but my rod nearly bounced off the railing and i was into a nice 21cm pouting which gave us a glimmer of hope and we stuck it out another hour before we packed up for home. we got a mystery fish in the bait trap when we pulled it up as we were packing away, all in all a lovely wee session. ALL fish were returned. :lol:

hummm.. never caught a mystery fish before :lol: ..

if you can describe it there's a good chance someone will be able to tell you what it is..

i have pics of all the fish we caught and thought they were attached on, but as i see on our review they are not there.

I had a look in your gallery and the picture is there. Not sure but my first reaction is it's a whiting ? although the black speckles on it's back make me have doubts ! Someone will have the answer !!

id say a pollack that lives in the kelp!

Good Fishing there man, Found the Dee to be alright recently, was down on Thursday night, had a Ween of Coalies, Whiting, Pouting and Pollack all on Sandeel and Mack, Rod tips were busy.

cheers drew, was looking at some of your pics, i think you were fishing there one night a couple of months ago when we were down. we were both fishing on the float with glow lights

i would say pollack cause you can just about make out a curved lateral line.

cheers everyone, we photograph all our decent fish from our trips but when i posted them on this report they have'nt come up, thought i followed the right steps, same as putting them in our gallery which worked ok. open to suggestions guys

latteral line suggests its a pollock... every thing else makes it look weird..

Used to catch lots of Whiting with speckles like that in Dun Laoighaire years ago. Mystery fish is Definitely a Whiting.

cheers everyone for all the feedback on the mystery fish. the fishmonger who i buy my mackeral off was at my house this morning and i showed him the pic and he says he is 99.9% sure it is a whiting and this other mystery fish is a juvenile pollack, so look and compare the differences... is the jury still out?????
