Wed Feb 06, 2008 12:40 pm

People: Me

Duration: 1.00 - 4.40 pm

Tide: HW at 3.45 pm

Weather: Calm, mild with a few heavy showers

Bait: Crab, squid, mackerel, black lug

Rigs: 2 hook 4/0 paternoster and 2 hook flounder rig size 2

Results: 1 flounder

Report: I crossed Youghal Bridge on Sunday as a competion was in progess and as I passed one angler had just caught a good sized codling (maybe 3 3.5 lb) I decided to take Monday afternoon off and try my luck. Rather than fish from the bridge I fished from the river bank on the Cork side. It was quite a mild afternoon, sunny but with a few heavy showers so I was glad I was not on the bridge

There was quite a strong flow of fresh water in the river which didn't bode well, but I was hopeful that something might show up on the rising tide. But I just caught one small half pound flounder on squid tipped with mackerel. The other rod with crab bait was untouched.

I got snagged a few times and lost a couple of rigs, including one which had a fish on it - it wasn't putting up much of fight before I got snagged so it was probably another small flounder.

Although it was not much of a result, one small flounder is better than my last few fishing attempts.

Try some mussel the next time you are in that particular spot, and fish it from the bottom of the tide.

Thanks for the tip Tom, I will try that the next time.

Yes Rodger one flounder is definitely better than none - I went home reasonably happy and it broke my January jinx - that flounder was my first fish since New Years Eve although I did not get to do too much fishing in January.
