Report: Following a tip from John Lynch (thanks John) decided to try a few casts on my way back to Cork from Cloghane. Got down to the beach late, realised I had no wellies or waders, so ended up barefoot wading.
Had forgotten how the waves worked down there, so one minute there'd be 30yds of sand in front of me, next minute I'd be up to my knees in water. Not even sure if I was properly reaching the surf proper or not. Anyway with a bit of running and wave dodging I think I got a cast or two out. Anyway, nothing turned up, and as my feet were starting to lose feeling I cut my losses and headed home.

I was down fishing Dingle myself last Sunday, Monday and Tuesday in strong SW gales and rain for 3 days, but did manage a nice 7lb+ painted ray of Stradbally. I had planned to post a report and photo but my home computer died. Hope the weather had calmed by Friday.

FMCN what bait were you using for the painted ray?

Very interested in painted rays, been doing some digging...

For small ones, I am told the best baits are crab, prawn and shellfish.

For big ones, use a whole small fish such as sand eel, whiting or poor cod. They move to being active predators once they grow up!

FWIW

Whole small sandeel meant for a bass. I was doing a slow retrieve to change bait and it picked it up and headed out to sea. I actually thought i had a decent bass on at the start.

yes I was, but it wasn't too bad really. I've swum in the North Sea in January (snow on the beach as well), so Brandon Bay is practically tropical :)
Saw a kid this morning messing about int the sea off Fountainstown beach for about an hour with a shortie wetsuit on, so no biggie wading out barefoot :oops:

You're Scottish,you think waders and jackets are for those soft southerners :lol: ...Still most of us wouldn't have bothered so fair play.
Haven't been down that way in ages...hope it's picked up from the last time i was down that direction.
